San Diego RX Club: Rally Event in May
San Diego RX Club: Rally Event in May
Please mark your calendars for our upcoming rally in the May time frame. earlier rather than later. Below is Dave' intro to the event. Start thinking about who you want as a navigator. Dave is working hard to get this in shape for us.
From Dave (1st gen):
The RX-7 Club of San Diego will be having a "Fun Rally" in May of 2007. The difference between this type of rally and the standard road run is that the rally is competitive. All entrants will be given a set of clues that they must use to figure out where to go, with each car being launched separately from the others at two minute intervals. It is recommended that each car have both a driver and a navigator, as the navigator can read the directions, write the answers to the occasional questions, and generally provide another set of eyes to look for listed landmarks. The winner will have the most correct answers to the 30 questions, with mileage and/or time elapsed being used as tiebreakers.
The rally is not a race, as all driving must be done at the speed limit (those driving too fast or too slow would lose the tiebreaker). All contestants will be given a sealed envelope with the directions to the finish line, where everyone will meet for lunch. Obviously, if you get so lost that you have to open the envelope you will forfeit any chance of winning, but at least you will be guaranteed to meet the survivors for lunch at the end. The rally directions will not be as hard as similar rallies in other car clubs, where less than 50% of the participants fail to finish. This rally has been made easy enough so that 90% of you should be able to get to the finish line without opening your envelope.
Hope to see many of you there! Pass the work to the RX-8 guys and gals!!!

San Diego Rally: May 20th
Date: Sunday, May 20th
Time to Arrive : 9:30am
Rally Start: 10:00am
Fee: $8 (Exact change required.)
All the details have been worked out and on May 20, 2007 the RX-7 Club of San Diego will hold a "fun rally" for all who are interested. A fun rally differs from a scenic drive in that it is a competition, with an award going to the team who does the best. Contestants are given a set of instructions that contains clues as to where to turn, and must answer questions about certain landmarks along the way to prove that they were on the right course.
A navigator is highly recommended in addition to the driver, so that the navigator can read the clues and write the answers while the driver drives and provides an extra set of eyes. All driving is done at the speed limit, with odometer miles and/or time spent being used as tie-breakers should more than one team answer all of the questions correctly.
The rally will begin at 10:00am with the first car being launched at 10:15am. Subsequent cars will launch at two (2) minute intervals, so you will occasionally see other rally teams here and there during your drive around San Diego County. The rally will be over two (2) hours long, and will end somewhere around lunch time at a pizza restaurant, where we can all have lunch and swap stories.
Aside from a navigator, you will need to bring $8 in cash for the entrance fee (please bring exact change, not a $20 bill.... you will see why at the rally start). You'll probably also want to bring some extra money if you want to have some pizza and/or beer at the survivors’ party at the finish. Don't worry, the rally is not TOO difficult, so about 95% of you should be able to complete the rally. Further info on start locations and other details will be listed here in the near future.
More details to come.
Please RSVP to John by May 12th.

I'm guessing that since this is going to be a scenic drive, much of it is going to take place on the back roads in east county. There's not much in the way of shortcuts for these roads. Also, as your given clues to determine the route you have to take, using any shortcut will be more likely to get you completely lost than get you to the finish line any faster.

POSTPONED
Sorry guys, but at the recent monthly meeting on May 5th, it was deceded that we should postpone the event a couple of months in order to drum up business. Not many responded with a definite "YES, I am going to attend." We did not want to expend a lot of energy for a very small group. Not that they wouldn't be worth it. We just felt that it would be much more fun to have a larger group.
That being said, the event will happen at the end of August, on a Sunday, probably the weekend after the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. A sseparate thread will be started to advertise the rally. Please pass this on to other car enthusiasts. We would like to have mostly rotary, but all will be welcome.
For the day the rally was going to be held, I will run one of our scenic drives. All I need to do is figure out where wer are going and get the announcement out.
Sorry for the postponement, but we all (About 17 of us.) decided it best to slip the date. If you have any questions, either post or drop me a line.
