Exhaust emmission question

Before I start I want to say sorry if this question has been asked before, and I've been lookin all over this site for info on the set up I want to put in, but Ca is so strict on emmissions (what's new about that) I figured I'd go straight to the source.

For my 91 vert I was looking at the Borla exhaust system and I was looking at replacing the main cat with the Corksport midpipe. I know that all I need is one cat and I should be ok, but something tells me I might not pass a smog check and that cops are probably going to hassle me becuase of the midpipe. I've been trying to find the "Ask a Cop" thread and no luck for some reason and ask him about it.

Does anyone know if this set up is goin to give me problems with smog and cops? Trust me the last thing I need is another ticket from these Dublin cops.

Thanks for the info.

just keep your cats on until you pass smog... once you pass, you're good for another 2 years or so, then you can put your midpipe and cat-back on... if smog comes around again, then swap the pipes back off and put back on your cats... same crap over and over, unless you got some other illegal **** on your car, in which i know you probably would later in time... then you would have to PM one of those guys from So-Cal to hook you up

Car will not pass the emission portion of the test without the main catalytic converter on it.

Keep the main cat on there until smog is done. About the midpipe, pick up one with a resonator on it, so you're not too loud.

If you need smog hookups, Please PM Wackyracer. The guy is awesome. He could help you pass smog with no paperwork.

The Borla "sportsman" that everyone uses is not as good as their "multicore" that no one buys becuase they copy the previous person. It is also alot more expensive then the sportsman. If you are talking about have a custom Borla exhaust and not inserting it in to the mid pipe, that's another story but the multicore is still a better choice.

Racing Beat has universal mufflers that are cheap, SS packing and extremely quiet. Kyle has a presilencer and muffler on his track only T2 and it is actually very quiet. I was shocked!

Cops will actually kneel down and peep underneath your car to see if there is a midpipe?

Yup! That has happened to me. I had kneel down with the officer, borrow his flashlight, just point out where my pre-cat was at.

doode it's easy if you have the rx7store resonated midpipe... just show him the magnaflow in the middle and say it is a cat... looks like a cat, so they won't be able to tell the difference...

Its not legal to replace 2 cats with one. But it is legal to replace 2 cats with 2 cats, as long as they are carb tested, OBD 1 units of the correct type, (2way, 3way, 3way + oxydation etc) there is nothing against replacing the actual pipe itself, which is pretty much part of the cats. This is of course only if the cats are no longer functional for some reason, if they are still functioning than it is allmost allways illegal to replace them.

Of course who is to say that they weren't bad/dented/rusted etc.
