Yup...cities are setting these up as simple ways to make more money....I have seen a couple of these and been very lucky to be going to opposite way. If I ever got caught up..I would have no choice but to pull over and pretend to need to make a phone call or something...man I have no idea what I would do.

lol, im hoping this **** doesnt come to the bay area. its not even the worst of it. and its not obamas doing, although i dont like him either.
over the last 10 years, they have been enacting all sorts of emissions laws to try to clean up california's air. not only do they do this, but they also have setup laser devices that from about 10-15 feet away can detect major polutants and it takes a picture of your license plate, sends it to bar, and you get a nice little letter in the mail........it gets worse
you have found the roadside blockade smog check, but they also do it on the freeway. they have 3-5 in the state, bigrigs specially outfitted with dynos and bar-97 machines with the best smog techs in the state running them. you get tagged on the freeway, your car gets lifted onto this rig, ran, then away you go.
they honestly arent trying to nail the owner, they are trying to combat the black market smog checks for people like us. they know that people can mod the **** out of cars with everything on the market, but they arent stupid. they have a list of cars that should be polluters based on year of the vehicle and the make.....its a sorta skewed system, but its almost 100% accurate.
anyways, moral of the story, they arent out to get anyone, they are trying to clean up the air, making everyones lives better, allowing our children to enjoy a clean state, and trying to combat the black market.
unfortunately, we are a select group that do get hassled only because of our engine.......

Lloyd

If anyone in an orange vest asks, all our cars are 35+ years old.

You realize that if Arnold handn't killed the rolling 30, 1980 RX7's would be exempt now.

Only if it doesn't have a rotory engine in it. Wankle cars have a special avoid-the-crusher exemption from these roadside checks due to their endangered specie status. Piston cars just aren't worthy.

If you had to smog your car to register and you came to one of these, will it count as passing smog, hence not having to pay for smog? =P

Too bad its not a HP dyno checkpoint.

I wonder if they target certain neighborhoods, places where they think people would not have smog legal cars.
