A flame AND a threat in one post? You have been warned REPEATEDLY before, and you always push the limits. Maybe you can learn to tone it down in the next week. Come back then if you can, for now you are banned.

Brad
This is absolutely rediculous... I am half tempted to desert this politically correct pink panty forum. "I think" you just saw it as a good oppertunity to get rid of someone who disagrees with you. Chris V is an excellent resource for FC information, and you banned him for something that you would most likely let slip had it been someone else. Get off of your power trip man... and dont delete this post.

You're lucky to have an LS1 car. My Z28 was an LT1 car, that creaked like hell going over bumps with the T tops out. That was my only problem with the car.

Subframe connectors and a 4 point have kept that issue at bay for me. Now if I can just get the bloody thing repaired from my accident at Sears Point, I'll be happy again.

Edit: Ok Dyre, I'll remove this part to avoid offending those people

Y'know, anytime we get to talking about putting ANY other motor in our precious RX7s people start getting all emotional. I can understand that. I got my GXL out of a junkyard so I could scavenge its motor to put in my Triumph. Now after driving the thing I find myself saying, "I can fix it! Yeah!" I also think this is one of the more well-expressed threads I've seen on this subject. There are still the adolescent "**** you" messages from people who can't control themselves or express better, but at least we're seeing some honest debate. It's a bummer you felt the need to ban ChrisV. He may get a little out of hands but I think he was a solid contributor. I hope that wasn't just a power trip, 'cause that WILL degrade the forum.
Anyway, my $.02: These cars are awesome. Period. The chassis kick ***, the rotary engines kick ***, and they make a beautiful package when combined. However, last I checked the name of this forum wasn't "rx7withthewankelrceorelseclub.com". I think we should look into what can be done to make this great car better, rather than slamming anyone who wants to make fundamental changes. And for those of you who can't see past that, grow up a little. You have your ride. They have theirs. I know you don't wanna hear from anybody about whether or how you can mod YOUR car. If you don't wanna help this guy mod his or at least contribute something intelligent to the conversation perhaps you would be better to just zip it.

First, ChrisV is welcome to his views, and to defend them here, to disagree with other users, whatever. BUT, he cannot seem to keep it civil. Yes, he IS a good source of information... including information on conversions. He just needs to learn to FOLLOW THE RULES. Maybe a week off will let him know that the rules are not there just for amusement. He has been given MORE than the standard number of warnings specified by the rules, and just won't listen.

Second, related to you comment about something that I would have "let slip had it been someone else," you are partly right. IF it was someone who hasn't been told TIME AND AGAIN to tone it down, that flames are NOT permitted, it would have just brought a warning. That's not a personal issue at all- that's just enforcing policy. Actually, if I were sticking to the rules 100% this would have happened long ago.

Third, if you want to "desert this politically correct pink panty forum," you are free to do so. If you don't like my decision, you are welcome to send a pm to Ryan (Boosted7) and discuss it with him.

I don't LIKE having to ban people. It doesn't help the forum in any way, other than to stop them from flaming, especially when it is someone who actually has something to contribute... but the rules are here to keep the forum pleasant for everyone. If the only way to get someone to follow the rules is a ban, so be it.

ChrisV, that was an absolutely excellent post, and if you don't mind, I'd like to put it up on my website - I want to make a page for "In Defense of RX-7 Conversions".

That $500 T2 is typical of RX-7s in NE Ohio. They're all rusted like that (in fact that one looked to be in quite good shape) and every spring you can buy FCs and FBs all day long for $500 with dead engines. In fact, my first RX-7 was one of these dead-engine FC's, got it in early '99. If that FC had a better running engine it would easily for got $2k-4k depending on circumstances. But it didn't, and so the price was $500.

Now what do you suppose happens to all of these dead RX-7's? Some of them get bought and turned into race cars. Some of them get bought and get junkyard engines put in them (and they end up for sale again the next spring). There is only so much market for dead RX-7s, and some of these cars just end up going to the crusher because the owner is tired of it sitting on the lawn. A V6 or V8 conversion is a relatively inexpensive way of KEEPING RX-7s ON THE ROAD. Which even the most fanatical of the "Holy Rotors" will admit is better than having less RX-7s alive and well on the roads.

BTW - what you said about the automatics confirms what I've suspected for years - that an automatic would kick tail on an autocross.

Actually, you said, let's see if I can find it...

The whole reason for owning an RX-7 is because of the rotory engine.
Which means, there are no other reasons to want an RX-7... the whole reason being the "rotory" (sic) engine.

Think about that. If the whole reason to buy one is for the engine, that means that you don't want one because of the way they feel, or the way they handle, or the way they look, or how light they are compared to similar models... all of that must therefore be worse than the alternatives, if the "whole reason for owning an RX-7 is because of the 'rotory' (sic) engine"

Well damn, if all that mattered was the rotary, I would have yanked the 4ZC1-T out of my Impulse and shoved a FC's 6-port in there. Hell it would have made the car more reliable too as the 4ZC1-T is a monumental pile of crap. But the RX-7 has other advantages, MANY other advantages. Better suspension. Better parts availability. More interior room (important when you're 6'5). Did I mention better parts availability?

I love rotaries. I also love RX-7s. However I recognize that the two are NOT inextricably tied together... I would love to have an RX-3 or RX-4, or a rotary swap into any number of sub-2400 pound econoboxes. I would also love a Ford 289 in a 1st-gen, or (my current drooling scenario) a pair of small turbos hanging off of a prepped GM 2.8l six, attached to a race-prepped 200-4R and sitting under the hood of my FC. THAT would be FUN. Expensive, yes. Brutally quick, yes. Unique? Hell yes! Plus I wouldn't have to worry about getting special catalytic converters that are tough enough to withstand a rotary, either. Either would still be an RX-7, still handle like an RX-7 (rotaries are much heavier than you'd believe), still look like an RX-7, still feel like an RX-7, it just would be more liveable (in that I could have high power without high exhaust noise or high emissions) and it would be a BALL to drive. Can you imagine flooring the throttle from 1000rpm in a high gear, and SMOKING the tires? A V8 conversion would be horrible for drag racing IMO, unless you swap in a very healthy cam so kill off all that excess low-end torque... but then you have a 450+hp smallblock.

Oh come on, that's the first thing people take off of their RX-7, no matter what! It's like as soon as the title changes hands to an enthusiast, the wrenches are magnetically attracted to the bolts holding the A/C and P/S on and the only way to get the wrenches off is to remove the components

Chris may have gotten a little hot, but I wouldn't say he flammed anyone. Maybe someone got burned a little, but its not from unintelligent babling like some peoples random cursing and rude comments. Well I'd better stop arguing, wouldnt want to get a lunch detention....

For the price of a 20B first gen, I could build 30 ****** 355 smallblock/TH350 FB's.

Not that I ever would though.

I drive the TII and continue to try to reach 400 rwhp and, I deal with it needing to be very good tuning because it IS hard to do, it IS expensive, it IS an unusual thing to see on the road.

I bet that a majority of the people here who dislike chevy 350s have no expereince with them. Im not lumping together everyone who dislikes them, but Im willing to be that a good few people on this forum fall under that catagory. I still really want a rotary powered car, and I may very well pick up a gsl-se.

My bias against American V-8s started in highscool auto shop. There were about 3 of us rebuilding Japanese 4 cylinders and the rest of the class various v-8s. These v-8s w/ 60-80k miles on them needed bore jobs and the internals were very unimpressive, ie cast cranks, poor balancing, machining from factory. My Nissan 4cyl had 150k miles and ZERO measurable wear, factory hone marks were still there and same depth top to bottom. Everything was very well balanced (as evidenced from wear) and had counterweighted forged crank and a superb pent roof crossflow head w/ dual plugs. This engine had NOT had an easy life either; my mom used to make hard runs up MT Tamalpias all the time, my stepdad would commonly drive 65mph in 2nd cause he would forget to shift, my sister and I learned to drive in the car and I drove the car insanely hard-always against the redline - zero measurable wear. And the rest of the Japanese engines in the class were of similar condition.
These v-8s that everyone says are so reliable do run for many miles because they have 2x the redundancy compared to a 4cyl, but I imagine at 60-80% of their original power due to all the slop. Have American v-8s made huge leaps in quality in the last 10-20 years or what?

BTW, the above response is just about my bias against American v-8s, it has nothing to do w/ my love for turbo rotary. Not even comparing those two; if there was even 1 guy rebuilding a turbo rotary after it broke an apex seal and destroyed its rotors and housings in my HS auto class I probably would have bias against rotary too. If I was doing a piston engine swap in a rx-7 I would probably go w/ SR20DET-from what I've seen Nissan builds a nice engine.

People are stuck on thier opinions and arguments like this are not going to change that. Just accept it: Some people will like the swap, some won't. That's it.
Letting this continue just allows people to get more and more heated up, and people start flaming.... it goes no where. People are gonna get warnings and be banned, look at ChrisV.
The 2nd gen forum should be about help, not about pointless arguments. This should be in the lounge, if anywhere.

Sean,

You have some very good points... but consider this:

If I close these threads just because I know damned well it's going to turn into a flame fest (like it ALWAYS does) then the V8 proponents complain that I'm doing it just because I don't like V8 engines. (I own a 69 Cougar convertible with a big-block Ford in it... so do I REALLY hate V8's?)

If I leave them open, I have to give warnings or even bans WITHOUT FAIL. I don't hate V8's, but I DO hate these threads because they are a pain in the ***, period.

Bottom line- the threads are not against the rules, so they stay open. Whoever breaks the rules within the thread will be dealt with as needed. I don't LIKE it, but it's the way I have to do it. If everyone keeps it clean (I don't mean profanity, I mean no flaming) we can discuss this topic as long as anyone cares to. If a few individuals feel the need to flame, they will be warned/banned etc as needed. If the whole topic goes up in flames it will be locked. That is the same way we treat EVERY topic that is even semi-on-topic.
