sup everybody...i'm more into the honda/acura thing but i'm trying to learn more about the rx7's too. i was wondering if you are able to fit a LS1 motor out of a newer camaro into a FB. I'm pretty sure that you can fit one into a FD but i didn't know if it would fit in the first gen's. if you could help me out with the answer i would greatly appreciate it....

you're trying to learn more about rx7's by taking the thing that makes them an rx7 out? doesn't make a lot of sense

 

its not for me....my friend has a rx7 and he wants to put the ls1 motor in it and i figured i would ask so that i could learn if you could do it in the first gens too

 

Not the best first post to make. Yes itl fit, lotsa fab work, moving radiator forward to make room and such. Definately not a good place to ask a v8 swap question, we are rotary enthusiasts. Good luck in your project and i would advise using the search button

 

gl finding someone to help you out... tell your friend to put it in 13b instead...no one likes an rx7 with pistons....

 

i told my friend to put in the twin turbo 13b but he wants to do the ls1 because of some weird reason...i like the way the rx7 motors are but i can't change what he wants to do...

 

BACKSTABBER!!!!!!!!!!.....lol just kidding...That LS1 motor has got to feel sick in such a small car like a first gen 7.

 

I hope he likes wasting money, not only does he have to remove the whole drivetrain, widen the trans tunnel, replace the rearend, and complete suspension on the car, but the only thing it will be good for is going down a straight line. rx7doctor

Yes it'll work, but don't expect it to be anywhere near easy or bolt in. I saw a first generation with a 460 in it so I'm sure it would fit. I will tell you this though, i used to own an SS Camaro and I had a real hard time trying to get all the power in that motor to hook up and not lose traction. An engine such as that in a 1st gen Rx7 would sit there and spin all day long unless your buddy wants to tub the rear, have ladder bars, wheelie bars, 9" rear end, slicks, don't expect to recieve a road legal daily driver, and make sure he wants to spend the money.

If not tell him to suck it up and throw in a turbocharged 13B and he'll have plenty of power to throw it around without doing burnouts at stop lights.

 

You do realize the LS1 is an all aluiminum engine, right? I bet you wouldnt mind someone swapping a Turbo 20B into an FB, which weighs considerably more, and moves the engine weight even further towards the nose. Fact is an LS1, with the T-56 Transmission will only add about 150 lbs to the weight of the FB. You would add that with a turbo and all the accessories to go with it, and still wouldnt have a reliable 400HP/TQ. Dont get me wrong, I love the rotary to death and always will. I spend tons of money on my Rx-7 and my rotary engines (see sig), but dont disrespect what can be done with modern v-8 technology. Were not talking about an old iron block/head 305 here, the LSx engines are incredible. I may LS1 swap my FC when my new engine goes.

 

There is an entire forum for engine swaps. That would be a good place to look for information. Actually there are some owners of 350-400 hp rotary engines who consider them reliable. Nevertheless the LS-1 has a few advantages. You will have to essentially rebuild the car with new suspension, but that would be a good thing in any case. If done properly, it could handle very well.

Again, how many of you have ever driven a well done V8 conversion? Suspension, if your build ing your 7 up even with a rotary you still have to pay good money to get a good suspension, or do you like riding around on 20 year old pieces that may go at anytime. For what I see people put into a good turbo setup a V8 swap can also be done with the same money or less, of course it depends on what you want. In a nut shell do the V8 swap so I can take your R&D and do an LS-1 swap myself.

 

Yes the LS1 is a great swap. Although Brian Hinson did not do it with an FB. I had at first considered a V-8 swap with my 85 SE, deciding against it after getting to know the rotary and easy it is to work on. No, I will never get 400 hp out of it, but then again I really don't need it. I still ponder the V-8 swap although it will NOT be with my SE. Found an 84 limited with a blown 12a in it. Thought about a chevy 302 for it, but then again the chevy 302 in itself is not an easy motor to find. Possibilities are endless though. Granny's is another place to look for info on this.

why put a pos piston engine in a beatifully balanced rx7 (WITH THE MOTOR BEHIND THE FRONT AXLE!) perfect 50/50 weight distribution! it will take corners like nothing else with a rotor in it.... why the hell would u do that to a car? even if you were dragging it or sumthin and it didnt need to take corners... you would just get a car worthwhile taking on drag racing... unless u were gonna drag race it with a rotary... but thats another story

 

ls1 are one of the best engines ever made in every way

i agree, the LS1 is an incredible motor, and is great in a CHEVY! haha... i'd never disgrace an rx7 with a piston engine personally, although there is someone here in WA with an incredible LS1 twin turbo setup in an FD....

 

as much as love RE's i do keep in mind that its just a car, do whatever fits your liking

and shove those 13b's in datsuns 1500's

never said the ls1 wasnt good, if u want a **** v8 just look for any holden or one lol it doesnt matter whether it is a new or old modoel motor cos its still the same technology lol
