The slips are in...

my first time at the dragstrip in my first rx7! 87 TII , Albuquerque NM (alt. 6688 ft)

run1
React: .077
60ft: 2.488
660ft: 10.786
ET: 16.731 @ 83.907 mph

Run2
React: .277
60ft: 2.465
660ft: 10.707
ET: 16.622 @ 84.492 mph

BOO! i rebuilt the engine myself this winter after i bought the car with "newly rebuilt 12,000mi rebuild" which had blown rear rotor....
i replaced intermediate housings and endplates but decided to keep rotor housings despite scratches from carbon and apex seal chunks. i get good compression (~95 lbs) on both rotors, but only get about 6 lbs boost out of it b4 it wastegates all away. cutting off the single remaining cat soon since i got 2 year registration - but aside from that how do u go about tuning boost?

the port valve actuator that reads vacuum and opens that flap in exhaust manifold is the first thing scheduled for "re-tooling" (means shoving a bolt in the mechanism hole after i gut it) and after that ill fool with the wastegate lever arm adjustment untill i get about 8 lbs - but it still seems like a slow time for rotary even running 6lbs....

not to be cruel, but a crx will go faster....

1) is the motor broken in?
2) what other maintence issues have you addressed? the 87 TII in stock form should do 15.9ish at 5.5 psi. odds are you have some power being lost to old sensors, a possible out of spec TPS and perhaps a worn out 02 sensor.

motor well broken in, went 1200 mi and 3 oil changes before i went above 4k rpm,
as far as maintenance issues... i inspected most everything easy to determine during the rebuild, o2 sensor looks good - replaced the spark plugs... but tps out of whack u say?
the car has centerforce clutch in it which i think stinks (needs to be replaced anyway, just overlooked it in my eagerness to get the car rolling) and causes the clutch to stick often enough. my shift fom 1st to 2nd takes like 2 seconds to drop in (not sure if its slow syncromesh, non disengaging clutchplate due to centerforce weights, or my worn out shift lever bushings)

.... solenoids unchecked... i have the capacity to check anything - a shop with my own corner bay and all the necessary tools, but the two mechanics who work there (my father and his co-worker) have never owned rotaries, and very very rarely turned wrenches on 'em, so im a little out of luck as far as experience goes... what other maintenance issues need to be addressed?

You also need to learn to launch the car, a 2.4 60ft is pretty bad.. You sure the wastegate isnt leaking? The nearly 7000 ft elevation also robs you of roughly 7% of your HP.

my launches SUCK i do agree, and im sure almost a second and a half comes just from the launch + the LONG shift into 2nd. i read in my haynes book that you have to add 90 weight to the top of the transmission where the shift lever bushing drops in - im not sure if that is my shifting problem. i also mentioned before that i have centerforce clutch - which i think stinks in this application. i can launch at 5k rpm and it just pulls the motor down. only way i can burn 'em is jerkin the clutch out at 5k while making 90 degree turns

wastegate leak? that sounds plausible - it idles a little like it has a vacuum leak, but ive inspected every vacuum line and all connected. im finna do a clutch job this weekend, while i have the tranny out i will pull the turbo + exhaust manifold and czech the wastegate. i think im gonna have to port the wastegate as i plan to cut off my last cat. i also wanna pull out the flapper vacuum actuater found in the exhaust manifold. (not sure what it does, even the guy at my local rotary shop cant very well understand what im talking about until i show him, and even then cant explain the purpose) still running 550cc injectors, but had em recently cleaned and flowtested, so i think as long as my fuelpump is getting voltage and my wastegate port allows me to control boost below the fuel cut ill be cool. maybe ill get a more stock-ie track time... eventually i see the necessity of getting a fuel cut defenser and an A'PEXi S-AFC fuel controller - but i dont want to run more than the 8lbs stock boost for now anyway....

im at a freakin loss where to start is all. i want to buy a JDM s5 w/tranny to get ported, but still dont know why im not getting what i want out of this one... maybe ill blow an 80 shot into the intercooler. maybe ill go frontmount intercooler and custom fabricate a ram air duct from the hoodscoop to the stock air filter box...
maybe ill end this essay...
