I ran the same wheels, I had to roll and flare my fenders to prevent rubbing.

Hi mate,
Can't comment on the front, but I'm sure someone else will =)
You'll need a 5 or even 7mm spacer as a 38 offset will push the wheel deep into the well with a 6" backspace - which is a lot.

The fronts will fit with a 225/45 tire and the rears will fit with a 5mm spacer with 245/40 or 255/40 tires.

Here you go ladies and gents!

After reading miles and tabulating the results I've put together a spreadsheet that I hope will help people. Simply put, it takes your REAR wheel width and the Offset, then tells you the backspacing and frontspacing that wheel has. In simple terms if tells you what will fit and gives you an idea of how it will look.

Thanks to everyone who posted info, I have determined the maximum 'in use' back and front space figures allowable with the standard unrolled guards. Once said, I always suggest rolling the guards for safety reasons if you put wide wheels and rubber on.

Wheel Width_____Offset_____Back Spacing_____Front Spacing_____Notes:
inchs____mm_____mm_____inchs____mm_____inchs____mm

7_______178______40______5.1_____129_____1.9______ 49_____Stock
8_______203______25______5.0_____127_____3.0______ 77_____Works+R&F OK
8_______203______35______5.4_____137_____2.6______ 67_____Works
8.5______216_____30______5.4_____138_____3.1______ 78_____Works
9_______229______22______5.4_____136_____3.6______ 92_____TDIT S5 20BT
9_______229______36______5.9_____150_____3.1______ 78_____Works
9_______229______24______5.4_____138_____3.6______ 90_____Works+R&F OK R245
9_______229______25______5.5_____139_____3.5______ 89_____Works
9_______229______30______5.7_____144_____3.3______ 84_____Works
9.5______241______27_____5.8_____148_____3.7______ _94_____Works
9.5______241______25_____5.7_____146_____3.8______ _96_____Works Great R255
10______254______25_____6.0_____152_____4.0_______ 102____Works R255/35 or /30

This tells us the max:
Backspace in use is exactly 152mm (mm/25.4 for inches)
Frontspace in use is exactly 102mm

With a backspace of 152, and a front space of 102, the math says that’s a 10” wide rim. Though to err on the safe side take 5mm of each figure and run a 9.5 +25 or +27

Formula is:
Backspace (width/2)+(offset value)
Frontspace (width/2)-(offset value)
1" = 25.4mm
Use the formula to calculate your backspace / frontspace and see if your planned wheels will fit.

So what’s the downside to running out and getting some 18x10 +25’s? Only stagger really… But with a 225 front and a 245/255 rear, it shouldn’t be a huge problem (esp with the 245). Why I didn’t say bigger than 255 is you can really only run a 255 with a small aspect ratio before things start to rub. But you can do that with a 9 or 9.5 and some 255/30’s. I’m running 18x9 with 245/35’s and there is zero tire bulge. So 255/30 wouldn’t be a big issue – yes I have rolled arches. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing at all wrong with a 10” rim – and if that’s what you want to run, then so be it. All I’m saying is you don’t need a 10 to run 255’s.

As far as what tires to run, this comes down to personal choice, desired look AND what will fit. Because stretching is illegal here, as is having the wheel or tire sitting outside the line of the guard, my tire choices have been tapered accordingly. Remember, these are suggestions only AND I’m talking about the rears.

On 7” a 205 to 225(215)
On 8” a 225 to 245(235)
On 9” a 245 to 255
On 10” a 255 to 275
Aspect rations are up to you and what's available. Remember rear diameter stock is 627mm.

If anyone has larger rears than 255 which don’t exceed the line of the guard, please post a pic and let us know what wheel specs you are running so I can update the chart.

My thanks to everyone who contributed – you know who you are – even if you haven’t posted in years =)

Cheers!

Thanks for the info! I didn't include pulled or wide body guards as that is a complete grey area. Great to know they fit though! Mmmmm Power!

235/255, fender rolling is a maybe depending on ride height and camber.

LOL no. You would need 25mm over fenders, camber and a 205/40.

Slight flaw in your system. Backspacing is measured from the outermost part of the lip to the hub face. Now considering an 8" wheel actually measures close to 9" in overall width, you cannot directly compare backspacing and offset with your formula as is.

Remember the figures used are based on what is in use - ie: what people have running. So the thickness of a the average rim lip has little to no bearing in determining what will fit and how it will look. I'm not saying what will fit based on the figures, the figures are telling what has been used and what will fit.
I'm yet to determine the maximum back and front space possible - by pysically measuring it - but lip thickness will always be a variable, as much as different brand tyres, sizes and ever pressures will effect the overall clearances right at the limit.

Hi mate,

A 17x8 28 will actually work front and rear - it's one of the few sizes that I 'personally' know will work on the front =) You may need a small (really small) spacer (less than 5mm) on the front, but so long as you're not overly agressive on your tyre choices it should be peachy.

As far as tyres go, a 225 on the front will be nice, on the rear a 225 or 235 would be peachy. 225/45 is approx 5mm taller than standard, a 235/40 10mm shorter.

An after thought; You can run a 5mm spacer on the rear without any problems if they don't sit the way you'd prefer.

Can't help with 17x9's for the front. PM MaczPayne - he's got a lot of info on what fits on the front. Just a thought, you don't need a 9" to run 215's. In fact that's going to be kinda stretched. IMHO I'd run the 17x8 and a 215. Will fit standard front end - as will the 225's (which is what I have atm.)

Should fit, but you'll most likely need a 5mm spacer to clear the coilovers.

Coilovers are required to run those wheels, rolled fenders will work as well.

My brother in law has a set of work wheels, 18x8 +35 all around. What size spacers would I need to make them sit flush with 30mm front and rear fenders?

just got my wheels in 17x8 +35 front and rear when i bolted the front wheel on without tires...the rear wheel lip only has like barely any clearance before it will rub my coilovers....and the outside lip seems to be sitting pretty flush...rear dosent sit flush...should i get spacers for the front or since it is close but not rubbing i will be fine?? what about for the rear to make it sit flush??

thanx

You can yes, but 'should you' is another question - which is open to opinion... The minimum recomended width for a 7" is in fact a 195 with a preferable profile of 45. So yes, you can do it and yes it will look slightly stretched. But wouldn't you want to have a little more grip there? Personally I'd run a 205 or even a 215 (at the right ratio) for the extra directional control. That's my 2c, but yes your 195 will fit and will look stretched.

Re the front, I don't think they're going to fit without a lot of work. A 25 offset works on the front, as does a 27 with a spacer, but a 35 will need a large spacer and coilovers if I'm recalling MP's previous post.

Re the rears, spacer for sure. Start with a 5mm. Should look better. Go to 7 if you have to. If you look back at the table I did, you'll see a +25 offset on the rear works quite well. Once said, I am not recommending a 10mm spacer.

5mm on the rears, 7 if you want to.

Not sure about the fronts, 35 is a lot to run up there. You 'on paper' would need a 10mm spacer, but I'm concerned about running a spacer that large - especially on the front. PM MaczPayne as he has a lot of front wheel info.

Widest tire...

How much tire do you think I could fit on 17x9 +30's all around?

Do you think I could fit a 235/45 up front and a 255/45 out back?

I'm running Stance Pro's, thinking about 2 degrees camber up front, not much camber in the back. I do plan on rolling the fenders, especially the fronts. Leaning towards Kumo MX's. Thanks
