245/45/16's going the way of the dinosaur?

I'm looking for some aggressive tires to put on the stock FD rims. I've been reading and 245/45/16 seem to be the most that I can get away with. However, looking at TireRack, I'm only presented with about 6 different tires to choose from. Am I not looking in the right place or should I step it up to a 245/50/16, as those seem to be more popular? To be more specific, I'm looking for a tire that's under $180 and will be great on the autox track, but is still a street tire as well. Anybody wanna chime in?

I've noticed that as well. The only decent tire the Tire Rack offers in that size is the potenza 750, and I wouldnt really want to run them on my FD. You can always get the Toyo T1Rs from ebay. Otherwise, you're basically screwed. A lot of guys will start going back to the stock 225/50s soon........

So I should just go up a size to the 50's then? I'd like to stay as wide as possible.

Edited to add that these are my choices in 245/45/16:

Fuzion ZRi
Yokohama AVS ES100
Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212
Toyo Proxes TR1
Falken FK451

I have no experience with any of these, so any ups or downs would be appreciated.

Out of those, I would probably pick the Toyo's for a good "all around" performing tire.

Honestly, I don't think any of them are suited for a 400 rwhp car. Although, most in that category have moved up to 17 or 18 inch wheels by now.

i've heard good things about the Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212. a lot of grip for the price, a little bit more grip then the kumho mx. they got a faster time in the bf goodrich g-force ta k/d in the grassroot motorsports tire comparison test

Well, apparently a 245/50/16 doesn't fit, at least not with a '99 bumper. I had to go 225/50/16 in the front with a 245/50/16 in the back.
