Anyone got ANY information on the old style Mazdaspeed/Exedy Twin Discs?
Hey guys,
I'm looking for anyone with information on the old style mazdaspeed/exedy twin disc clutchs. I'm talking about the old dinosaur clutch that has the single hub attached to the first disc and then the second disc slides over the hub teeth going through the intermediate plate.
I found one in pretty good shape and am in the process of installing it and am having some problems.
I cannot for the life of me find any information on this older style clutch NOR does exedy have anything on it.
This is the guy I'm talking about.
I'm getting this nasty grinding sound when I got to engage the clutch. While chatter is normal this is definitely too loud and nasty to be ok. I will be pulling the transmission and clutch tonight to inspect it and see if I can find the source of the problem but ANY advise or experience with this type of clutch is much appreciated.
not sure what info you're looking for, but i have the catalog listing. the two at the bottom are the discs, A and B. to use this on the FC it needs a special throwout bearing, looks like the FD uses the stock throwout bearing

it lists the friction disc thickness at 3.6mm
Awesome. Not even Exedy was able to provide that. I figured out my problem and will be posting a technical write up about this clutch, how it works, tolerances,and things to look out for here soon. While you do see these guys on the forums for sale, there literally is NO information out there. Thanks again!

Skeese, bumping this old thread. By any chance do you know the torque rating of this clutch as well as if replacement discs are still obtainable? Found a good deal on one with 3mm of life on the discs.

I did a little research and was able to verify the P/N for the old style mazdaspeed/rebadged exedy twin disc full clutch kit and each of the replacement discs below.
This website was the only place I was able to locate a real reference to replacement parts for those. The "B" clutch disc was more expensive because it included the hub in the old style and the A disc did not. I highly doubt you'd be able to get new discs for these and I know if you call either Mazdaspeed or Exedy about it they'll just laugh at you.
As j9fd3s mentioned above, the "new" width of each of the discs is 3.6mm. In both the table above and the product catalog image earlier in the thread it gives the capacity of the clutch as 900 kg-force which converts to 1984 lbs-force which I assume to be the clamping force of the clutch. I don't know what this translates to in terms of ft.lbs of torque holding capability, but can say that I'm still running the twin from this thread on my car which was installed probably 5000 miles ago with 2.8-3.0mm on the discs and has held the power from my 600+ hp semi port big turbo setup without slipping.
