Turbo Placement

I have been looking at a few single turbo setups and I noticed that a lot of the manifolds place the turbine housing very close to the lower intake manifold. I was just looking at a pic from another thread... http://www.daltonautomotive.com/ops6feb19b.jpg
...and I saw an HKS cast manifold that places the tubine less than an inch from one or more of the intake runners.
Now I know space is pretty tight and length of the manifold runners come into play but I have seen how hot these turbine housings get and would not feel comfortable setting it this close to anything. The stock air temp sensor on an FD sits just under the intake manifold. So, if the aluminum intake manifold is conducting a lot of the heat from the turbine housing (which I assume it is) then the intake temp readings are very innacurrate since it is placed before the hottest part of the intake path. My turbo sits up a lot more forward then most turbos and even though it was a pain in the *** fitting everything up (IC tubing, air filter, etc..) I feel more comfortable keeping the turbine housing away from the intake manifold. Has anyone put any real thought into this or am I just way off on my thinking? I know I have seen some people construct heat sheilds that guard reflect some of the heat away from the intake runners (Gordon Mosnsen comes to mind) but I know a lot of people don't do this. Could some of you guys with different turbo manifolds post up some pics of how your turbo is configured in your engine compartment? I am especially interested in seeing some of your heat shield designs. I'll start...

Is that a screen on your compressor inlet? Do you run that all the time? I would think a screen fine enough to trap contamination would cause too much delta P.

Maybe he got the idea from me. If you're going to use a screen you should try using 2 clamps so that you can clamp the screen at the back of the compressor inlet, fold it over, and clamp it at the front. One clamp should be ok, but if it fails for some reason your turbo probably wouldn't be verry happy.

Yes that is a screen and no I do not run around with just a screen. I just put that turbo on the car and didnt't have a filter to fit around the 4 inch inlet. My old turbo had a 3 inch inlet. I just put the screen on to take the car around the block and make sure it was working properly. I have a K&N filter on order. Now does anyone have any info on the topic at hand?

Has anyone seen just an oil inlet line for sale? I built my own setup but am having trouble finding the oil fitting that mounts to your engine. The O shaped fitting with the bolt through it.

You could get an adapter that goes from the thread of the banjo bolt to an AN thread. For a feed line you'll want to use a -4. Then you can make your line with readily available SS braided hose and AN fittings.

The oil fitting that comes out of your engine to the turbo is a 1/4 inch NPT.
