Trailing ignition, how important is it.

I would post this in the ecu forum, but it would take a year for a reply. I have got a Haltech e6X, which will NOT turn on my toggle no matter what, so trailing Ign is only firing on T1, and twice as much as it should, which was F#@cking my car up bad. I unplugged my trailing all together, and it runs very nice and smooth, and hit about 12 psi feeling great. SO I was wondering for the time being, until I get this haltech to function all the way, can I just run the leading for a now? Is trailing good for only startup and gas milege? Or is power effected?

Very minimal power loss, i dont believe under boost its doing much at all. I also do not run trailing, at first with poor tuning it was wipping my plugs out quickly but not much anymore. Try doing a search on trailing, there was at one time a large discussion on it.

I'll look into it, thanks for the reply.

I am not one of these people, I would LIKE to run the trailing, but the damn computer absoultly wont let me turn on the toggle option. So for the time being I am forced to run only leading, and was checking on how bad this was to do for temporary periods of time.

Please tell why, you do have a technical answer correct. Your not going to bore us with emissions and gas mileage are you, or a 5% pwr loss below 3k.

If trailing ignition did nothing, I doubt very much that people would spend a lot of time messing with split timing on the dyno, just to eek out a few more HP.

I think that most people are WRONG when they talk about split. But I'll save that battle for another day.

To answer the original poster's question, yes, you can run the car with leading plugs only and it will run just fine. You will lose a few % power, but not much.

Thanks for the help on the matter. I needed to know so I can start tunning my car, its killing me to drive it at 1/16 throttle everywhere, especially when the vette next to you dosent even know what you have under the hood. Haha. I really dont want to wait 6 months to get my ecu back from haltech, so for now, leading it is!

One other question.......
how do I still get a tach reading, as that is the only thing I miss right now, can I hook up trailing and run the one plug wire that is firing to a ground, so I have a rpm gauge? Or will that wreck havoc on all my sensors? What are you using as a tach LTproject?

I assume your refering to your instrument cluster and not the ecm. Since im not running trailing i have a msd dis2 on the leading plugs. I know this doesnt help you but i bought an aftermarket tach that was dis compatible. Inside the dis2 program you can arrange the tach signal to read correctly without having the trailing hooked up. As far as hooking up a plug wire and grounding it(live spark under hood) thats probably not a good idea. It would help if i knew what yr car your working with, and your basic setup.

thanks

Yeah I figured that a live spark would not be a good idea. But thought I'd throw it out there anyway.
As for my setup:
I have a 1985 Rx-7, 1990 TII streetported engine, A TO4S 60-1 , .98 turbine. Fully divided manifold. Tial wastegate 42mm. Stock TII ignition, Haltech e6X computer, 550cc primarys, 1600cc secondaries. Walbro fuel pump, sx regulator, second fuel pump w/ surge tank. Front mount intercooler. using a Lt-1 wideband. Blah blah blah, haha, nothing to get excited about compared to others on the forum. Looking to get 360 rwhp, at a nice 14-15psi.

Well I have it very roughly tuned, running about 10.8-11.0 afr, which is on the rich side, but man it pulls all the way to 8000rpm! I really like this setup. As far as the 360 goes LTproject, I think I may have something different from you...... my rear tires are R-compound, and 10" wide, which break lose only in first , and a little in second. I beat the F$#ck out of a brand new bmw M3 today on the freeway, from 85-120, got him by about 13 car lengths. haha, so much fun.....
Here is my sig. its long so I dont usually post it.
