slow as hell

went out today and had the pleasure of driving my single turbo fd in 92 degree weather for the first time. I went to the gym, came out (after car sat for about an hour) started it and went. It was still warm and im sure everything under the hood was heat soaked.

so on the way home 5 mins of driving later i decide to hit it a little in second for fun, and man this thing felt like i had a turbo hose off. It was laggier (as if that were possible) and felt like it was making no power.

i still have my air temp sensor in the stock spot so im sure it was cooking and the haltech was making some absurd correction based on this, im also using the stock radiator atm but hopefully will be getting a new one. my car has a fmic so i would assume it would cool off quickly, stock hood, no undertray plastic (dosent fit with intercooler)

is everyone elses car this much of a dog when its this hot out?

Heat makes a huge difference, especially if its humid out side. Juring a really hot day I can feel my car loose power.

Take your car out at night time when its cool and give it a pull. It should feel better, but if it doesnt, you might have a problem.

Yeah combination of no undertray and stock radiator will cause temps to be high with a moderately modified car. Get a aftermarket radiator in that car.

Dude I never saw that you didnt have an undertray-this is very bad!!

Use a jigsaw to cut around the undertray, and get that thing back on. If not get some thin aluminum form home depot and make your own tary, jsut cut it out.

BTW an aftermart rad can cool you off as much as 20f (i believe)

I dont run an undertray and my temps seldom get over 84C with greddy two row...I prefer to have no undertray and slightly tilted the radiator downward to alleviated the heat soak.

I agree, the undertray does not make that much of a difference, especially if all the necessary coolant mods have been done (doesn't fit this case, but still).

Whithout going into huge detail, an undertray is a very important part of your cooling system. Go to the 3rd gen forum, and search "cooling". Carl

This is true if your radiator is still in the stock (angled) position. The tray helps divert air flow through the radiator and maintain down force. Most single turbo coversion results in modifying the radiator position to stand vertical. This allows more air flow.

Back on topic, I have never had any problems driving in 95+ temp. Although there is a peak power difference running in extreme temp differences (95+ in the day, <70 at night) but no where near slow. You have a problem.

yeah, when I had a stock radiator and no undertray, my car would overheat like a ************, which probably led to it having a very weak motor, which then led to a rebuild....

yeah, im not having any problems with coolant temps. so I dont think the undertray is what my issue is.

like i said its probably the air temp sensor throwing off my e6k and pulling all my timing. Ill have to hook it up and check sometime this week.

Thanks all for some insight into other issues and how your cars run in the heat.

What does the coolant correction maps look like?

Air correction?

Timing correction?

Do you have a WB to see what your AFR are?

Log some data and see what you find out.

i saw no reason to start another thread since this one is dealing with IC's, radiators and undertrays. so here's my question: Will i be able to run a stock undertray with a Rotary Extreme Monster V-mount/radiator? thanks in advance

water injection does wonders to eliminate heat soak. The harder you push your car the colder your intake temps are. Intercoolers are only so efficient. With the water injection your car always feels like its cold outside.

If the a/c sucks in your car like it did in mine. Just take it out. Once I removed the condensor off of the radiator my car never gets hot and takes a lot longer to warm up than it used to. Just a thought to reduce temps without buying anything

Ahhh welcome to my world...I live in 90 degree plus temps with high humidity on a daily basis. I go through the entire summer and most of the fall and always feel the car is still an absolute bullet...until that first cold day (usually around Nov. 1) and I have to relearn to drive the beast because she's just picked up 50 horsepower.

As far as not running the undertray, it'll cause the airflow to simply go under the car and not through the radiator. Air will always take the path of least resistance. Try heading out on the highway at 85mph and see what happens. Not having the undertray will also seriously screw with your aerodynamics in a really bad way. Don't do any top speed runs!
