Oil and smoke from turbo oil return

hi everyone,

i have a single turbo setup on my FD and seem to have some sort of oil over pressure problem. Oil is coming out from the under side of the turbo... around the oil return flange I think... and it smokes a bit after a drive. Have also noticed oil around tops of oil injection!

So far have disconnected the oil catch can, purely to let the system breathe but still having the problem...

ideas?!!?

Thanks in advance

What is the oil presure reading? Stock or aftermarket oil presure regulator?

I had the same issue when running a 4AN line into a BW turbo without a restrictor. I get 120 psi of oil pressure at startup and above 3,000 RPMs. Installed a Freelance turbo oil regulator and adjusted it to reduce the pressure by half to the turbo. No more issues....

Stock oil pressure regulator...

i do have a restrictor in the line that a previous mechanic put in... perhaps I should go an aftermarket oil pressure regulator then.

Looks like they are now $142. Kinda expensive, but takes all the guesswork out of restrictor sizing. I would verify its not your drain first.

the return is 19mm from memory... i’ll have to recheck the pressure side.

Prior to having the restrictor in the car was smoking like a bitch under acceleration 🙈. Still get a bit of smoke on startup but that is probably based around this issue too.

Thanks!! It looks pretty good. I looked at the Turbosmart range too which look good but are $179.

Thats a cool oil presure kit. If the oil presure is good. It could be loose oil return line bolts and loose oil injectors. Where the top oil injector hose is routed too? When oil injectors go bad they can let oil come out from the top.

It depends on the turbo. Journal bearing turbos like a Borg Warner S366 do not usually need a restrictor. Ball bearing turbos sometimes do. Borg Warner EFR turbos do not need an external restrictor and recommend a -6AN feed if the feed is coming from greater than 2ft away (or something close to that at least).

If oil is coming out from around the return flange, then I doubt it's a pressure issue.

What kind of turbo do you have. Do not just slap a regulator on it without being sure that's the issue.

i recently replaced the gasket in the oil return because I thought that was the problem but it’s still leaking. Bolts are definitely tight. I’ll check the oil injectors today.

its a GTW3884r dual ball bearing turbo FYI. It did smoke a lot out the exhaust before the restrictor bit I guess now the pressure is not right for it....

Yea, definetly check the presure regulator. I have bw and i run -4 from the front iron to -3 on the turbo with no restrictor and no smoke. Stock presure regulator.

Great news... finally solved all the problems.

Seems to have come down to the mechanic who installed my engine .

After checking just about everything, oil pressures, restrictor size found that the vacuum line for the oil injectors and been plugged into the pressure side of the turbo. Rerouted it to the inlet of the turbo and works sweet. No more puff of smoke on start up or oil leaks!

oil return flange bolts appeared to be only just bottoming out and had to shim them up with a thin washer under each bolt. no more smoke from under the turbo!! Lol. Not sure if there originally was washers but this def fixed it.

definirely gonna monitor everything for a while to be sure but so far so good
