Smoke Smoke Smoke (rebuild part #2)

OK, now that I have resolved the "won't stay started" problem, I have yet another. I already know what you are going to tell me, but I would also like to play the wishful thinking lottery. So, here's how my ticket reads.

Smoke coming from the turbo/downpipe area, even after car is off, and for a considerable amount of time.

Realistic thinking:

turbo external oil leak

bad turbo oil seals

Objection to realistic thinking:

Purchased NEW turbo oil line/ new seals/installed

If turbo was leaking internally, would not continuously smoke, but would shortly die off because no oil is being pumped to turbo

same for external. no oil being pumped

Wishful thinking:

Oil from the rebuild is sitting in the precat. Seeing how my car is currently on a ramp, and hot air rises, this would cause the smoke to appear that it was coming from the turbo. It would be continuous because the precat continues to burn stored oil that has gotten caught. This would be supplemented by the oil/smoke that also came from the main cat.

Shooting some skeet:

The smoke also comes from the turbo shield, which would mean that it would have to be a leak either coming off of the tubo flange or from the manifold. It is more propable that oil is leaking from around the turbo or in the turbo.

Its the turbo, isn't it?

So, is it coming out of the exhaust?

If not it could not be that bad

Ok, so oil goes into the turbo via a high pressure line. Is that bolted to the spider tightly? Probally not that, good way away from something hot. Then it goes to the turbo. Is it possible that you let one of the copper crush rings slip out?

Then it leaves the turbo in the big line. Is it possible that lil paper gasket is not in right. Not sure how to describe this. However, I did it. And caught it before I started the car. So you put this gasket on. and you start bringing the flex tube to the turbo. You then push the bolts through and tighten. But what you do not notice is the damn gasket slipped. Only one bolt is going through it. So you then ....unknowningly put the other bolt on the flex pipe and tighten. However, the gasket is now hanging out.

This is a possibility on both ends of the flex pipe.

Ok, what if it is coming out of the oil pan. that is a possiblilty. Make sure those bolts are tight. But not to tight. Not much torque.

Does that help?

smoke comes out of the tail pipe--- and all of the holes in the exhaust system. This is a freshly rebuilt engine and I don't think I have put 30 minutes on it yet. It is possible that the smoke is rebuild burnoff. But I really doubt that. It smokes about for up to 10 mins after I turn it off, and it takes some time for it to start smoking out of that area. Actually, its about 5-10 minutes.

I am worried that it might be the turbo... It has a small amount of play in it, but its not x-axis play. I just hope its not one of the oil seals inside of the turbo.

I have been waiting for this car to run since early summer! I really don't want to end up finishing my senior year NOT driving my own car. Do you understand my frustration here?

Thanks for the help. Those are some good ideas I will check.

Well if the downpipe has a gasket and is not leaking exaust, then it has to be an external oil leak. Or the water line is leaking. Its that hard line held with two 10mm size nuts.

Are you sure its oil and not water???????

Have you driven this car much since the rebuild. Does any smoke come from the exaust?

Remember those two large o'rings that go on the intake manifold. Are they leaking???? The ones b/t the intake manifold and the *block*.

Oh, it comes out of the exhaust. I was under the impression it was external.

Huh,

HAILERS:

I don't think its a water leak. It has that rancid burning oil smell.

I am 100% sure this exhaust system has leaks. I have visual confirmation on that. (actually, I think it has the original on it!!! I do intend to replace it.... when something reasonable comes along that is)

I am really worried its the turbo. its still smoking out the tail pipes even though there is almost no pressure coming out of them (that's how bad the leaks are)

Also note I am running 150:1 premix and the OMP is on and working as well. Some of the smoke could be coming from there, but I really don't think that is where the smoke is actually coming from.

Also, the smoke coming out the tail pipe is a shade whiter than that coming from the engine bay, which is a shade bluer.

Well you can take the downpipe off and take a look inside the turbo(easier said than done).

On a fresh rebuild, its possible for the grease and oil to be thrown out into the exaust when first starting the car. There it sits, depending how far back it got thrown, and will not burn off until that section of the exaust get up to a temp that will burn it off. Takes some time. Hope thats all it is.

I just drove it for a few miles. There is almost no smoke coming from the tailpipes. Smoke still comes from the engine bay. It's not dense smoke, but it comes out fast. (heat wave?)

Also, I got home and it said the exhaust system was overheating and it would not crank back up (immediately) but the water temps were fine and the oil pressure was as well.
