Did your friend John just use the fusion method when welding the manifold together? It kind of looks like it.


Here is my fusion welding, kinda looks like yours but your welder had a steadier hand. I just hope it will hold up to the heat.



This is what maxthe7man had on his T2 and he said it worked great with the 40mm Tial. I know it's not two wastegates but it should give you an idea where a proven area has been taken out of the main runners for the wastegate.

He acually used alot of rod when he was welding it, the only part that he fused was the inside of the t4 flange.

With some Tig welding under my belt, I now can say the real trick is to have the work mounted really nice and steady and have a good steady place to sit, I did all my manifold standing, but started sitting when I did aluminium, it makes a big difference especially with a foot pedal tig, and practise makes perfect.. My manifold was the first thing I ever tig welded, it was a great learning experience..
My next manifold I will splurge for new materials, I got most of my piping used from an ice cream plant, new material is so much cleaner to work with by the looks of it..
That design is pretty neat, I will pass on the advice I got from a stainless steel pipefitter prior to making mine..
My first prototype I built out of mild steel , I had one pipe wrap under the second one, much the same as that, but it was a tighter bend, as my prototype used the Greddy manifold positioning( I used it as a placement template). I showed the guy my design, he said if I were to use it, once it was heated to 2000 deg, the expansion would literally crush the elbows and crack the welds as I had the pipes travelling towards each other and then away from each other, all the piping should push in the same direction or push together with expansion, I was unaware of how much stainless steel grew at that point, he said the mild steel version would probably outlast the stainless one, however he also said there is a type of stainless that does take well to being used like that, and its typically mandrel bent, I can't remember the name of it, but its softer, has less of a coefficient of expansion, and doesn't work harden, the downside is that it doesn't have the all the corosion inhibitors of the 321/304 grade.
Manifold design and life is a crap shoot, the only way to tell if something will work is to try it I guess, I got lucky with mine , it makes good power, hopefully you guys have the same luck to..Max

Accident?

Why do you ask if my car was in an accident? I thought maybe cuz I have the front bumper off, but I looked at all the pics and you couldn't have seen that.

Well Here is a pic of my car (before I tore it down for the winter). There are more pics of my car on here, but I don't know how to post them twice.

I ask because in these two pics I noticed that your inside fender is buckled... my friends car has been hit on the front some and its buckled as well. Have you checked your frame? It may be out of whack but not enough to notice?

Its not buckled, the other side looks the same. I think what you are seeing is a bad paint job by a guy that thought he could paint good, having never painted before. Yeah that guy is me, but I have gotten better since then. The next time I blow a motor or have to take it out for whatever reason I am going to repaint it.

Haha... that "buckling" in the two pics there.... When I noticed that in my engine bay I thought maybe mine had been in an accident too... but *EVERY* FC I have ever seen under the hood of has that same shape in the fender well there. I think it's part of the design somehow.

Well Like I said before, this is a prototype. I want to make two differant styles, this one being the more race version, the next will be a shorter runner single waste version....Price is still up in the air, and I already know of a few changes I will make to the next ones to make them better. I am most probably going to sell them, and that is why I have been trying to get lots of input from people to improve on the design. But all your cars have the steering box, brake booster, master cylinder etc... on the other side. It is so unfair. Maybe I should convert to left hand drive.

ttt means "to the top" and the manifold is holding up fine for just sitting on a parked car...Ha Ha. I need to get that ****** running man! I am not worried about breakage.

Have you even ran/driven it yet? Yeah, it will probably hold up fine. Pipe elbows are bad *** for strength.
