Does everyone that makes their own single kit get a downpipe made or make a downpipe from scratch. Or do you guys with existing SS downpipes just modify them. I was planning on doing this but just was seeing how many of you guys did that.

we made mine from scratch at gotham racing. just get mandrel bends and cut and weld. of course i already had the v-band stub and a flange for the midpipe. kinda like a connect the dots thing

 

lots of guys from trini have custom stuff done....downpipes included...

 

I have some pics here to give you an idea of what I did.. basically, I took some 3" rigid dryer hose and bent it to fit the car. I took dimensions and fed them to the guys at stainlessworks.net. It took a few weeks for them to get around to their 3.5" tubing work.. $120 for the bent tube, 3.5 --> 3.0 reducer and shipping. $20 for 2 stainless o2 bungs, $15 for the flange..

 

I am getting my entire exhaust built by stainless works.

Im getting a 3in turbo back exhaust with a custom 3in chambered turbo muffler, under the axle, with a N1 style at the rear, everything 100% stainless steel, with CNC mandrel bends and band clamps all for about $400.

Cant beat that price.

I also emailed them asking about there different muffler designs and what kind of sound I was looking for, explaining what a rotary normally sounds like.

He told me there bigger 5x9x18, turbo mufflers with chambered core, placed in the middle to middle/front would help to reduce the higher pitched sounds.

I still am wondering though if anybody has just cut and rewelded the downpipe they used for the stock twins, just with the new turbo flange?

 

For starters, if you're having to cut and weld anyway it's just not worth it.. I sold my Pettit stainless pipe for more than it cost me to build one from scratch.

Second, you're going to need a pipe that just fits differently. The twin downpipe swings the front part pretty close to the car because the turbo exit is to the side. Pretty much everything else is more centered in the opening between the engine and the car.

It's not worth cutting it up just because you have one sitting there. You can probably get away with 2 flanges, 2 45* bends and a flexible section in the center.. I know I've seen at least one person make a downpipe like that and it was forgiving for fitment.

 

I made my own 2.5" stainless downpipe for my single turbo. Except mine was for a FB.

I bought a couple mandrel "U" bends and cut/fit/welded them into place. Worked like a champ and it was cheep also.
