Question Boost Spike Damage?

I need some tech troubleshooting after a very large boost spike. I've been running 13lbs and a very unfortunate situation led to a 28+lbs spike.

The only reason my engine is still running is because I think my Garrett GT35R turbo popped before I had time to even react to the spike...I'm thinking it's good thing it did. I assume it popped because I no longer have boost. So my first question is, can a turbo be dead even if it still spins? I pulled it off the car and I can spin the wheel without any noticeable damage to the fins or bearings.

Second problem is that I could not get my engine over 5K rpms. It starts, idles, and runs fine till that point. I was thinking the damaged turbo was restricting airflow, but since it spins ok I'm having second thoughts about if my motor survivied without damage. Do you think I damaged/popped my motor too?

My last question is, do you know where I can get a GT35R...Cheap!! Thanks.

If the turbo compressor and turbine are both not damaged and they rotate normally, most likely the turbo is good. You have either a blown WG, hoses, controller, or engine.

You do not come across as being experieneced, get help!

Chaek all your vacuum / sensing hoses , especially the one to the MAP sensor .

I put my turbo back in and did as you both recommended. I check all my hoses and my intake hose that runs through my wheel well had popped off just enough so pressure would not build but not enough to be noticeable, it is well hidden so I didn't see it before.

Thankfully, my turbo and motor are fine and I'll take this opportunity to thank Rob at Pineapple Racing for building such a bullet proof motor. My boost controller is shot so right now I'm running at the wastegate minimum of 9lbs.

Its true I'm not the most experienced guy with rotaries and turbos, but I'm in Germany and don't have many choices to get help I trust. I'm just glad it worked out ok. Thank you cewrx7r1 and Marcel for your help. I'm also glad my potential disaster was so amusing for you fallenangel...you seem like a truly helpful forum member.

do many ECU's have overboost fuel cut? I can't see how a spike that bad happens...

It wasn't a spike, it was something else.

this is very likely it...or i should say hopefully!!

also, try resetting your ecu by disconnecting the neg terminal and braking for 10 seconds. If there is a major error code in the ecu, the ecu will switch to limp mode and will cut fuel at nearly any sign of boost. This actually happened to me a few times when the hose on the map sensor popped off during a race.

good luck

I don't see how an engine tuned for 13lbs could possibly survive a 28 lbs boost.
