May inspect the drive shaft u-joints as well. if they haven't been replaced they may be the culprit. Also, at one point during the first resto of my FB I failed to torque the driveshft flange bolts all the way down. It was ever so slightlt loose, but caused a hell of a vibration . Just a couple thoughts.

My clunking went away after RE-SPEED bushing went in all around.

Andre I'm not sure if this is recommended by the Safety Commission but I've done it before it to trouble shoot rear end clunking.

Find a Very Flat place, block the front wheels, then jack the rear end up with a floor jack under the pumpkin so that BOTH wheels are about 2" off the ground.

Give the car a good shake to be sure it's not going to slip off the jack.

Then you can start the car in neutral, listen for noise, then shift into first and reverse, to see if the noise reveals itself.

Be careful, plan for the worst, and DON'T CLIMB UNDER THE CAR WHILE THE WHEELS ARE TURNING.

You might want to check with some other rotor heads first to see if this is a good idea, it's one is one of my own home grown methods.

those aren't over sized wheels. those are the factory wheels for the 83 limited, which happened to only come in that goldish siver color and only came with red interior. i think it's safe to say that's an 83 limited. pretty rare car.

Ben, Michael and the rest of you Young Bucks, this is the reference standard for the SA/FB:

Name: whiteone225.jpg
Views: 75
Size: 49.6 KB

Metal flaps added to the rear of the car for that "Fast and Furious Look" pretty much destroy the 1st gen 7's elegant lines, making it look like a whale.

That's why they're called "Whale Tails".

Those over sized waffle wheels were an experiment that didn't work. That's why they were only on a "Limited Edition".

Indeed, the "X" wheel was and remains to this day the pinnacle of wheel design perfection.

And aluminum window dressing (or "Targa Tops") added to some 1st gens by people of european decent to make a car that looks way better than any Porsche look more like a Porsche is just a clever way to get people to spend money they don't need to spend.

But Old Guys know better.

The Good News: Whale Tails, Waffle Wheels and Targa Tops are easily removed and there may even be a market for them in some circles.

Ray your just stirring it up again I can tell. What your showing us is the reference
standard for an FB. The reference for an SA would be this:

Oh and don't get me started on your waffle reference. Waffles rule! They only went
to the plus wheels because they were cheaper and heavier than the waffles used
on the SA. After the SA it was all about maximizing the profits, thats why FBs have
cheap plastic bumpers and beehive oil coolers

That spoiler is not a whale tail either, its a factory 3 piece spoiler that was a dealer
installed option I think.

I agree with your statements regarding the fake targa top chrome bits. Tacky, just
tacky. Even worse is the rocker panel chrome dressup patches some folks added.

Well you two have pretty much insulted eveyone in the SA/FB crowd, how about some insults for the FCs, FDs, FEs, RX-2, 3, 4, REPU folks?

I'll leave the Cosmo off the list. Even you two could not insult that master piece.

Nice use of bold characters, Tim. It drives Ray nuts.

BTW, Tender Blue Metalic rules...

The early Cosmos had CRAPPY APEX SEALS and they all look like Toyotas on amphetamines.

And if I ever get my sig uncensored I'll show you how to use BOLD type Mike! Only it will be GREEN and SILVER, not sissy blue!

Tim, I agree, the early SA's did have some primitive features, like steel waffles and cast iron bumpers that, by FB standards, seem quaint but still acceptable for the early blueprint 7's.

But don't even get me going on the beehives, you know you'll lose that one.

I think I only insulted the FB crowd, if anyone.

Well, unless you have that chrome crap on your car, sorry about my opinion on
that one but, hey, I have a bra on my car and some folks don't like that either.

Ray the waffles are cast aluminium and the beehives are a cheap way to try and cool the oil
that failed, thats why in 84 they went back to front mount coolers for all RX models FC, FD and
FE included.

You know what they say, everyone has an opinion just like eveyone has an -------.

ray, the waffles wheels r baluminum not steel.

and this is a whale tail http://www.flickr.com/photos/wyndswe...ns/2371628779/. those others were manufacture options that probably many didn't opt for the reason many fb's don't have them.

Ben, be careful what you ask for. When you encourage Ray and Tim you can end up with more bull hockey than you wanted.

But, I did think it was nice of you to refer to Tim as Mr. Farrell. He is alot older than the rest of us. I think I will follow your lead and refer to him as Mr. Farrell.

We need to see Juno's new ride in person, at the March OGTA, so we can really apprecieate it's 1970's patina.

Ben you have good taste even though you called me Mr. Farrell. I'll try to ignore it
for now.

God I feel old now, but not as old as Ray

Mike you better watch your tongue or no homemade brewskies for you at the Mitty.
Besides your not that far behind.

Was that rx4 one of the ones that a guy was liquidating down there in a field in
GA? I remember seeing the ad in craigslist and there was a white one in the
picture along with a lot of 7s as well. Nice grab. We need more pics and the story of
how it came to be in your driveway. Now all it needs are some old skool 13" meshies
with some wider tires on them and lowered about an inch or so. Otherwise keep it
clean and stock (except under the hood ).

Ray when you going to fix that signature anyway? I think a 5th grader could help you with it.

Careful Juno. First he tries to lure you in with the "X" wheels, next he will be trying to install on nice beehive for your new ride.

We can make it happen and provide a timeless record of it if you come out to the Mitty! We can make you the waffle alignment czar. As long as you don't get all crazy and dictate who has to align what we won't revolt on you. Unless of course the homebrew czar gets us on his side, then you may be in trouble.

Me, a dictator? I kind of like the sound of that. Me and Mubarak can hang out down at the club.

Dave I'll bring the camera, you bring the waffle wheels. We can surprise Juno and put them on when she's not looking.

Then we can get Mr. Farrell to help us with the waffle wheel alignment, he's not called the Waffle Czar for nothing.

well after much inspection the rear brakes didnt seem to fix the problem entirely, but.... it did make a vast improvement. Also today I got my exaust fixed, adjusted my parking brake, and then went to sams where we destroyed the rats nest, did the secondary mod, and did some other improvements. Hats off to you sam. the ol' gal runs like a champ. im gonna do the front brakes as well. Im starting to notice a vibration at stopping now soooooo....... Im getting warmer. The front pads are in great shap, but that doesnt mean that the rotors aren't warped. to be continued......... Any body know why a 1983 fuel gauge wouldnt work in a 1982? Sam mentoned that the printed circut could be diffrent. ant other ideas?
