It even works on Gates Ware:

Collin, I'm swamped with work and rain this afternoon, but if you're still trying to get that stud out tomorrow afternoon I can bring over my drill (it goes around clockwise, I think) and a bunch of bits and easy outs and we can have a whack at your T'stat housing.

Zelienople? Mars? PA is weirder than I thought.

Currently on order-

Racing Beat Intake Manifold for a 13B 6 port and a throttle extender plate.

For why?

The plan is to carb the 13B with the 465 Holley that's on the dead 12A. Inject the 13B into the red shell. Sell the roller SE and the core 12A (if there's actually anything left on the inside of that motor)

Sounds good to me.

Any thoughts? Crit and I came up with this when I picked up his harness to try and get the 13B to run without the carb, but I wanna carb it anyways...

I was hoping you would come to that conclusion Quad. I'm guessing the next big thing in the Atlanta rotary axis is going to be GSL's and GS(L)'s with transplanted 13B's from SE's and FC's fed by Holley's and Del Horto's.

You can just smell it in the wind.

Well, economically it's my best solution. The only reason I'm using the red shell is because it's lighter, along with the electronics all work currently. The windsheild wipers and turn signal are really no big issue, but I'd rather just not have to deal with it. Plus the red one has all those cool stickers and a history that I know of.

Hey Roland, do you still want the SE shell? I know you were asking about it without the motor earlier, and that's how I plan on selling it.

As for my 12A. Everything that is left, that I don't need for the 13B will go with it. So the dizzy and everything. It's a solid motor, minus the seal issues. Anyone need one?

Also, once I get the manifold and I want to do the transplant, I'd need to move the Holley blue over to the SE temporarily until I can move the motor over. I'm assuming that's not a difficult task?

What all you taking just the engine? So you are leaving the ECU and harness, injectors and intake manifold? How much you want?

If either Kevin's 12A or Ray's 12A has a good rear rotor and either has a good rear iron, then the two can be combined to make one good motor. Two front housings, two sets of front hard seals, a rebuild kit, and a rear rotor (S3 12A isn't reversible front-rear). Maybe you guys could get together for one good engine.

Crit,
I know they are different part #'s ROTOR HOUSING FRONT N210-10-100
ROTOR HOUSING REAR N210-10-150. I think these part #'s are actually Japanese housings with the largest of all exhaust ports. Do you know what the difference is with the S3 F&R?

Yeah, I should have been more clear. If they have a good rear iron, center iron, and rear rotor then it may be salvageable. The rotors are unique front and rear, but the housings and hard seals could be stolen from the front rotor of either engine to populate the rear of the new engine.

That'd be three times for me Roland, third times a charm. My third Nikki rebuild, for example, was perfect (don't ask about the first two).

I like Crit's idea about the cores, I'm thinking 12A rebuild down the road (this is one OGTA that will never go 13B). Kevin, pm me you asking price for the core, I might be interested!

Speaking of 12As, the 12A in the Silver One is fantastic, I've got more than 3000 miles on the car now and it's by far the smoothest, most powerful 12A I've driven. Now that I've got the steering right and the brake booster has fixed itself (damn I love the auto repair features the Mazda engineers built into the 84/85 GSLs) the car is an absolute pleasure to drive. Especially during the 110 mile daily commute, 5:00 am, light traffic, cruising the left lane through the Gwinnett I85 gauntlet, head lights up, fresh morning air, 12A purring. I don't think even a lotus could give this much satisfaction.

The only problem is oil consumption, currently about 1 qt per fill up (350 miles; 15 gallons). I started treating it with some bardahl engine treatment about 200 miles ago, hoping that will help. It's too early to tell for sure but the smoke plumes seem to have diminished and it's running so well it might even be worth the expense of feeding it oil all the time.

You shop guys, can you get 55 gallon drums of Castrol 20-50W anywhere?

I'll take you up on that Tim. A 12A with a Del Horto could be interesting.

o u'll like it ray. i ran a mikuni on a stock 12a once just to see how different it would be from the holley 465 i was running. this was back when i was running an 83 12a in the 808 before the 13b build. the acceleration of the big 2bbl is like WOW! only thing was i could get better mileage with the much smaller bores(primaries) of the holley. makes me want to try one on my sp. just can't afford one.

Ray, you are welcome to drive my car anytime.
If you get one, maybe you'll learn to spell Dellorto (but probably not)

Roland and Ray- I have no idea what's even fair for a price. I really want to make up the 300$ I spent on the manifold for the 13B. I mean, I've put at least 3500$ total into the GSL-SE, but without a motor, I know it's somewhat worthless. Also Roland, would you want the cross member for the motor from the SE? I'd like to keep it for the swap into the red one, but I can always just slot the old one if you want it.

Greg-Ray will never learn Dellorto, and the fact that my car went to MazCARE not MazMART. Regardless, we still love him.

The carb is called a "Del Horto", named after Alfonzo Del Horto, the famous Italian race car driver.

A Dellorto is some kind of pineapple, I think.

Quad, shake and bake that 12A for awhile, it might come in handy in a future horse trade. But if it comes down to it, I'll offer $100. I can add it to Ace's other 12A and the 12A from the White One.

Three 12A cores = one 12A rebuild, right?

Sometimes. If they die a natural death, it's usually the rear rotor. That said, there are lots of front rotors and irons in this world - not many rears. If you get a surviving rear iron and rotor, then you've probably got a rebuild.

Remember, too, that you can look in with a flashlight into an exhaust port to see if the rotor, rear iron, center iron, and apex seals have survived.

Thanks Crit, I'm going to go out and check my rear rotors.

Here's a youtube video of Alfonzo. Caution, it's in Italian.
