The SE is BACK! Finally.
They finally put the remanufactured fuel injectors in, she idles kinda crazy, but all is now well. No more smoking, only if I start it quickly after I shut if off (such as when I got gas earlier).
How do I prevent that?

Idle mixture potentiometer on the passenger's strut tower. You might want to do a little reading to set your warm idle, cold idle, transistion temp, idle mixture, and TPS. All five are just screws to turn, but you'll be glad you did it.

So I've got tires for my rims now- I got a good deal on some used 235/45/17's and I could barely afford those... Anyways, they're going on soon, and I've already got the spline or whatever lug nuts, so within a week I'll feel 200x better about my car. I bought new rear pads too, and I'll have new front ones once I get some more cash to throw around.
I would post pictures, but tires aren't any fun. Everyone'll see soon!

Roland I noticed that graph was from Toyota too, but wouldn't the curves be similar for a rotary? After all, combustion is combustion, the nature of the chamber shouldn't have that big an effect. I like it because it shows the trade off between best economy and best power and torque.
But maybe this just applies to EFI systems, where the air/fuel mixture can be finely tuned?

Ray is correct. Those curves will apply to any gasoline burning engine. The actual numbers may vary some, but the overall shape of the curves and the AFR apply to us and any other gasoline burning engine. EFI is better for fine adjustments, but the AFR targets hold the same for a carb. For EFI, it is easier to target ecomomy for cruising and power for WOT. You have some ability to do that with a carb, but not much. You normally have to tune a carb for power, ecomomy, or somewhere in between.

A Big Thanks to Kevin (aka Kevin the Elder; Ace; Yayo; Dr. K) for donating parts to the common pool!
I've got the Silver One up on ramps, going over the undercarriage and fixing up about a hundred things (of course she's getting a complete degreasing and detergent wash down there, with fresh paint and undercoating to follow). Then I notice I forgot to install the heating shielding over the presilencer before we put the RB exhaust in last weekend, explaining why the cabin is a bit on the warm side sometimes.
So I'm about to extract the shield from the White One (which is the hard part, those mounting bolts are always rusted in place) when I remember Dr. K gave me a bunch of heat shielding a few weeks ago. So I check and sure enough, there's the heat shield I need.
It's cleaned up and ready to install ('course I need to take out the presilencer first).

Rims are on, with the fairly decent 235/45/17 tires that fit perfect. I fixed the front end shabbyness too, installing a new wheel bearing on the passenger side and straightening out the dust shields behind the rotors. Only 3 good pics for now... I'm not too sure if I like them, but they'll have to grow on me for now

The curves may be the same or similar - but you cannot compare a rotary engine to a piston engine. Rotary engines run way rich. Now i have seen a very FEW RX7's that had really clean results but i would assume everything was functioning properly. We used to deal with alot of this on customers RX7's. Even Greg the elders RX7 had way high emissions back in the day and we had to regulate it to pass.
On a side note, many newer engines are "lean burn" and will lean way out during cruise for economy. Even leaner than the 16:1 AFR shown for best economy. I have heard of engines leaning out to like 20:1 or even leaner under certain conditions. Some emissions increase under very lean conditions, but modern cats take care of that.
Typical narrow band O2 sensors (like used in the EFI rotaries) have a steep voltage vs. AFR curve. Basically they show either rich (output 1v, AFR < 14.7:1) or lean (voltage ~0v, AFR > 14.7:1). At 14.7:1, they show 0.5v, but they usually just bounce between low and high because of the steep voltage vs. AFR behavior.
Anyway, your best bet is to get a wideband O2 sensor (yes, they will work for carb setups too). That is the only way to see what is really going on. Then you can adjust your carb to target power, economy, or emissions.

The curve shows that if you run rich (like rotaries tend to do), you will have high HCs. This is true of rotaries too. Typically, this is where they fail badly on emissions. NOx and CO are usually good. These curves are also before the cats and such. This plot just shows output of emissions vs. different air fuel ratios. Usually you want around 12:1-12.5:1 for power. Turbo guys will often go even richer for safety.

So, I'm a lil pissed. The cheap short shifter that came in Wanda makes it impossible ot use but just one of the new shifter bushings I ordered...no change in the play in the shifter while in gear... was looking at the whole thing, the way it's designed...and it's not one of those things you can fix. Damn you ebay!
I'm in the market for an S5 shifter. Has to be S5 so I can use my shift ****... Anyone got a spare they don't want?
