Wow, lovin that standalone Josh!!
Well Sam, looks like our AFM's are a pretty weak link, from my logging my AFM maxes out at 880 CFM by 5700 rpm when in actuality it will be flowing more than that by 7000 rpms. But according to my calculations 880 CFM at 6000 rpms is right around 242 rwhp, not a bad start for this tuning experience...
Also a good thing that you went to fmic cuz my air intake temps don't drop all that much (from 125F to 118F) when cruising, maybe a few degrees and skyrocket quite a bit under boost (wonder if I ran out of meth, lol)...

That Miata is sick!!!!!
Right now the turbo FB is tuned nicely for 15psi. With the rev limiter set at 7000, I can pull 1rst through 4th to the rev limiter and the AFRs stay below 13.5. When the boost first kicks in the AFRs go down in the mid 12s. Mid 13s is the highest I have seen the AFRs with mid 90* humid as hell day. I'm happy with that. Chirpin' third is some hard *** pulling

At 15 psi a safe AFR is approximately 11.0-11.8, every motor is different. Some of the guru's on here who run water injection tune to the low 12's at the highest. Also note that rtek only pulls 1 degree for every pound of boost over 9 psi because the factory timing is VERY aggressive to begin with...Mazda tuned it for a stock turbo and stock porting etc.
Just my 2 cents...
I need this Van!!!! LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSwaV...eature=related
I now what your saying Anthony, but I can't see spending $500 for a ECU that will not let me run any more boost, still uses a 1 bar map sensor, and still uses a mass air flow. Especially when you can pick up a used Haltech for $5-$600. Tuning for a hot humid day is alot different than a cool day. If I tune in the mid 12s for a hot humid day, the AFRs will be in the low 10s on a cool day. Just my 2 cents.
Don't blame ya on that one. I spent many months trying to justify one or the other, but since my goals are only 300-350 rwhp I figured just upgrade the rtek for simplicity. You could probably sell your 1.7, and ur harness and get Josh's old Haltech standalone?
ok ordering the front mount and piping and bov tomorrow. went and picked up my new aem tru boost controller tonight. gonna make an attempt at installing this complicated mf in the morning. all in all the car is running great. stock ecu with a remap which is unknown is keeping my afr`s in the 10`s all the way to 8k on stock s4 wastegate spring. thank god its already ported for when i turn it up haha. timing is locked in the ecu so just gonna turn that back a bit on the cas and let her go.
Man, I would like to get my hands on the AEM. Glad I could help you out Josh.
Anthony. I am making well over the 300hp mark. No need for the "piggy back" R-Tek. You could have spent that $500+ bucks on a set of cryo apex seals, and me doing a nice large street port. That way, you could have saved your money for a futre purchace of a stand-alone. The beauty part of it would be that the engine would now be capable of handling more that 300hp.

J-Rat did 500+ rwhp on stock ports. Porting isn't always necessary to make good 'streetable' power. Now if we're talking a 1/4 mile beast or dyno Queen, that's a different story and porting is key. My objective is to make good reliable power, while being as efficient as possible (even tho it is a rotary, lol). Sure I could probably crank up the boost, turn up the meth, advance the timing and lean the car out and my 360+ to the wheels but if I only get a few pulls before it pops then that kinda ruins all the fun. We don't have the luxury of getting away with aggressive tunes as a piston engine does because one detonation can throw a seal whereas a piston engine has a higher tolerance to that abuse.
well guess what. im doin it without an rtek so :P haha. but seriously. who cares what guys doin it on stock ports and ****. cant we all just be turbocharged and happy? im happy with mine and ive not even cranked the boost yet. stupid top mount is heatsoakin bad on top of this woodstove of an engine. cant wait for the front mount and crap to get here so i can drop these intake temps down to something reasonable.
I couldn't get the car ready for Zmax in time but I did run today at Rockingham. My first run I did 14.26, granted my AFR's were very rich in the mid 10's my Air intake temps were in the 170's, and still on stock 6-7psi. Second run I pulled about 5% out of my injectors from 2-6 psi and spun 1st so hard that all of my interior fell apart on me so I just coasted down the track. My battery ended up falling out after that run and it was about 1am so called it a night. People go crazy for rx7's in Rockingham though, I think mine and Neal's always had some type of crowd around them. One too many people talking bout ls1 swaps though
Was a fun learning experience though! Wish that strip wasn't so far away, cuz it's very sticky
