SBG RX7 FD Projector Beam Pattern

Hello,

First off I want to say that these projectors are really nice and look great. I am not trying to be negative to you guys as I talked to Heath over the phone a couple days ago, really great guy and heard great things too, hopefully it wont go the opposite direction. I had gotten these in earlier this year and just now had time to install them.

I stated in my Email to you guys at SBG (never gotten a response...) that I would show images. I took pictures to show you what the beam pattern looks like. Figured Id post here in case others have same problem as me, maybe it will help them out what to look for.

I was told I would get a return shipping address and label sent to me in email, but never heard back. Not sure how long it takes to create a return shipping label. If you need my address just let me know and my order number and ill give it to you, which im sure you will need.

I asked Heath over the phone if it was possible to fix the rotation of the projectors my self and he said its unlikely as the projectors were permanently installed in the housing. Told me that they would have to make it new. Hate to have them do that though, I know its a lot of work and time. I originally told him it was only the passenger side projector that was off, but I went back out and really looked at it in more detail, the driver side projector is rotated a bit too, not as bad, but still noticeable. So I might have to send both them back to get worked on.

Below pictures show you the angle measurements of the headlight assembly and projector to let you know everything is squared. Also show pictures of the rotation of the beam pattern.

Told Heath I wasnt in a huge hurry, but then again I dont want a week or two to pass by before I hear back. Just want to feel like they care, take pride in their work and are willing to get this moving as what any other company with excellent customer service would do, when a defective product was sent out.

This give you a rough idea of the levelness

This is roughly where the beam pattern should be.

Well anyways, hope to hear back.
If anyone has suggestions then please let me know.

Maybe im being too picky, or they are supposed to look like this?

Thanks,
Brent

Sorry to hear that you got the same issue as me. If you have time to take some images and upload it, that will help. Sucks to pay a little over a thousand dollars for these to have this kind of issue.

Well its now day 3 since I talked to Heath over the phone, still no response... I just sent a follow up email. Will keep this updated. Hopefully he will respond when he feels I am important enough...

I’m not a lighting expert or anything, but mine look like that too I guess. It’s not a problem though. They aim just fine and I can see stuff. Think you’re just being too picky.

I have the two humps as well..
Compared to the stock lights though, damn. I ain't complaining. I've never been flashed by oncoming traffic and they light up the road like no other 90s car does.

Have you seen the beam pattern on a set of Amemiya lights? Or Rotary Run? Holy Hell. How about those R-Magic ones? At least these are made for driving on the right side of the road.

Day 4 and I sent a follow up email and finally got a response from a person name christian with return information. Glad I was able to hear back from them. I know they are busy but would be nice to get a quicker response.

Hey Thanks for the response guys. Really appreciate it. It appears that this is the way the SBG projectors are as I assume since all 4 of us thats posted up in this thread confirmed it. I am hoping SBG will respond to this thread to give their thoughts. Maybe I wont send them back and just accept the fact it is what it is with their projectors...

Yeah they are for sure better than the stock lighting. I cant confirm with other brand projectors out their for our cars though, so no comment there.

Its not the humps that im concerned about, but the angle of the projected horizontal beam per projector. I highlighted in red line the picture Mrmatt3645 posted up.

You know overall though when both are projected, it appears to create a solid horizontal light all they way as pictured below with the red line i marked.

Im just using his pictures as an example, as I dont have my headlights dialed in as far as left to right and up and down exact.

Again I guess maybe they supposed to look like this? Im no headlight projector expert either.

I know its no RX7 but using the below video as an example, you can clearly see how nice and horizontal each projector beam is compared to each other. Only referencing the Vid for visual, Please use the Instructions SBG provided for our cars.

Any more opinions about this?
Thanks,
Brent

Wow, I didn't know this was a defect. I have the same exact beam, the driver's side is lower than the passenger side. I assumed the driver's side is lower as to not blind on-coming traffic. My friend with an NSX had retrofitted projectors from an aftermarket vendor and he had the same beam pattern (driver's side lower than passenger side) which led me to assume it was designed this way.

What you’re referring to is the aiming of the headlights when you talk about the drivers side being lower. This is intended so that you don’t blind oncoming traffic. The OP is referencing the lines themselves when projected. They aren’t exactly level, but when projected together they appear level. This is a hand made product and it seems all are made this way. It doesn’t seem to effect anything TBH. I have no intention of returning mine for this. These headlights kick ***.

Hey Brent,
That's completely within spec for hand made headlights. You're talking about percentages of a degree. These are literally hand made... as you'll find if you get them on the road, percentages of a degree off from horizontal will not affect the output at all. Also the cutoff shields (internally) aren't even perfectly flat. I'm not sure what to say but that is absolutely "within spec" for our headlights. There's slop in your plastic clip in headlight mounts as well... you just don't see any of this with the halogens because they don't have a cutoff line that you can put a construction level up to

Take them out of the garage and onto the road...

Wow. Someone call the whaaambulance. The lights are fine. I'd like to see what the rest of the car looks like if you get so upset about a meaningless angle off on beam pattern.

Generally, on LHD vehicles, the light output is intentionally lower towards oncoming traffic as well. So a slight tilt to the lower left will actually be favorable for other drivers while not negatively affecting the bright spot of the HID.
