Broke a jerico gearbox

Chris Impey's FD,that did 9.6 last year with an RX8 gearbox now has a Jerico 4-speed clutchless box and a mcleod 'dragmag'clutch.
We have run this at a couple of meets and done 9.3 at 145mph,everything was sweet.
This weekend out,on his 3rd run,he went for 3rd gear and it wasn't there.
We stripped the box and the dog ring spline has sheared off 3rd gear,so no drive in that gear. Also one of the slider springs was stuck to the magnetic sump plug!
Jerico are surpised this broke like this, and so are we.
Anyone experienced a similar breakage? Any advice as to why? any input greatly appreciated.

Jerico told you guys that because they know you're a newbie in this game!
It's very common on all the boxes that use springs to hold the sliders. It's mainly from ware and tare but driver's miss use is mainly the reason. Inproper burnout procedure and shifting technique are mainly the fault for throwing the springs.
You will have to drain the oil from the tranny after every meet and make sure there's no springs stuck to the magnet. It's part of the operation. Also if the driver thinks he messed up on any of the shifts then it's also neccessary to check. As you get more experienced with the shifting process that problem will become less an occurance.
It only take one miss shift to drop springs.
Pm me for a little trick that will help keep the springs in place for a longer time.

Crispeed, thanks for the reply,I don't mean to be dumb, but I don't know how to PM you.
The gearbox has been working really well, when the shift light comes on he shifts into the next gear,as simple as that.
With the MT drag tyres,he has not been doing big burnouts, starts in 1st then into 2nd,and done.
What do you mean by a mis-shift?

Truly said crispeed.Had couple of my freinds do the same thing.Brand new box and trashed them by not following procedures. It could happen to any expensive tranny.

I have owned 2 jerico trannies one for 9 years and still going without any troubles. In fact this tranny is going to be raced again with new owner and project.Just follow
what crispeed said and the procedures.I did all that and never had any trouble. It is also recomended to change the springs every 30-60 passes.Oil is a big thing too,
use good quality oil.

Well honestly doing burnouts like that is going to lead to problems.
Which set of the sliders threw the springs?
At the level he's at you should start in 2nd or 3rd and get it into 4th as soon as possible. Trying to modulate the power in low gears with a powerfull setup is going to lead to problems with the tranny trying to neutralise on the burnout.

The only way you can misshift a clutchless tranny Jerico,G-force etc with V-gate shifter is if you pull the shifter slowly ,and or not put enough load into the motor when you release the clutch. Also you need slight pressure when holding the shifter in every shift.
If you miss a gear, dont't try to force it back in or clutch it.You have to stop completelyand start all over.

I've seen people hesitate to shift these trannies, cause its a mind boggling at first time. One time i tried to teach my friend how to use it on my Race car,he said its
"its not hard as it looks"When i let him use it and did a few laps on the parking lot,he completely was lost how to work it,especially when you go from 2nd to 3rd gear on the V-Gate,you know in your typical tranny ,power shifting from 2nd to 3rd is very difficult,my freind was just frozen when he tried to shift without the clutch and no H-pattern.

Is it this Rx7

The car still had the RX8 box when that video was filmed.

When I heard the car had broken over the weekend the last thing I expected was the new box

yeah, those vids sound like a full clutch tranny, not a clutchless. The shifts are too slow.
