premixing
What does premixing involve? Do you throw a quart of oil into your gas tank everytime you fill up or what? And is this alot of extra maintenance on your carb?

Don't put a quart of oil in your gas tank, you might end up blowing your motor. Using premix will decrease the octane in the gas. Pettit recommends using 4 ounces of premix when you fill up on gas.

You are injecting oil from the sump - oil which is ment to lube things, not ment to comust away, injecting it into the combustion chamber, so it is taking up some volume which idealisticly be used for air and or atomised petrol.
just mull on that one for a second. ok, now you with me?
Now, by putting 2 stroke oil in your petrol, it may lower the octane rating of the whole mixture in regards to overall volume, but it is by that little that is doesn't make any more difference than injecting SUMP OIL into the combustion chamber.
the bottom line is, premixxing is doing ALOT more good than harm.

Now that I got rid of the oil metering pump I add 1 oz./gallon.
That is what I have heard. Sounds like the max needed if you plan on hard engine operation. I think if you strickely went on the highway, less would be safe, but adding 1oz/gallon is what I hear is best for hard driving and will not harm you to have that extra 2cycle oil going in at lighter throttling lower rpm. I noticed that actually the engine starts easier now since I ditched the metering system. So maybe its true that 2cycle/gas mix is a good at keeping plugs and rotor faces cleaner but the added fill up time for the gas AND oil sucks a little when the weather outside is not favorable to measuring out 16oz oil into the tank..

It only takes me a few minutes to add the oil to the gas, but once in a while it can be a pain.
