dowel pin oil leak

I have a leak between the rear plate and the rear housing in the dowel pin area. The motor was just rebuilt so everything besides that is ok.
1. Could i just pull off the rear plate and reseal everything and put it back on without touching anything else?
2. Do i need to replace the water seals when i do this?
3. The car is supposed to be on the dyno on the 29-30th. I can not change that date. I have good oil pressure. Could i just keep an eye on the oil level for now and fix the problem later?
4. If i get tuned now without fixing the problem, will the tune be screwed up after i fix the problem?

Any and all responses are appreciated. If i am going to pull the motor apart i need to order the parts ASAP.

thanks

If i just pulled the rear plate i would shift the oil pan down and put all the bolts in, install a turbo manifold and clamp the two rotor housings together on top. Will this work?

if you have time now...take care of it.. shouldnt take you but a day's work. to reseal everything over again...as far as replacing the seals. if it aint broke why replace it?
just remove it normally...clean everything and wipe everything down with micro fiber cloth....PUT RTV where you need to... Dowel pins, between the plates..etc etc...youll leak oil in these places. Good luck and godspeed!!

just wait until after it's tuned..... you'll most likely end up with it leaking more if you rush it.

when they leak oil there it is usually because the rear plate is cracked around the dowel?

Who ever rebuilt it proably forgot the dowel pin O-Ring. If you pull the rear Iron make sure the rest of the Housing/Irons dont move. Like bolt them to the front before you pull the iron this way you will make sure that the rest of the seals dont move. If the motor has less then about 500miles on it then the rear seals should be ok to reuse, but I cant tell you for sure. Just buy one new inner/outter just in case.

If you have vitron waters seals you can take the rear iron off and see what happened. However if you don't than you will have to rely on rtv but hopefully it will come apart all nice like and you won't have a heart attack after messing up the entire rear water seals. Good Luck.

On my first rebuild, I had my engine all put together and torqued and looked over on my bench and saw that I had put a smaller front cover o-ring on one of my dowel pins. I had to take everything back apart and found of course that it was one of the front dowels. Since it was my first rebuild I guess I did it twice and learned that much more and it was really easy to take the motor back apart and I was able to reuse all the seals. But I never ran the motor. Did you already run the motor? Because if you did then you will most likely have to replace all the water and compression o-rings because once the engine gets hot and then cools down it bakes those seals to the housings and when you tear it back apart they will probably tear.

Two ways this will happen I can think of:

- The less common, missing or using the wrong o-ring for the dowel o-ring land
- The more common, the motor severely knocking and cracking the iron at the dowel land

The suggestions about taking the rear iron off are correct but I'm suspect as to what caused this. You might find a cracked rear iron once it's removed.
