blew hayes engine!!!

For the people that are thinking about buying a hayes engine, they suck. The motor in my car is the 2nd hayes engine that has been installed. The motor before, water seal went out at 7k miles; the engine after that(the one that Im removing), external coolent seal blew at 4k miles. Am I going to pay the money to send it to them becuase it still under warrenty, hell no. Im only posting this for the pep's that are thinking about slapping in one of those lifetime hayes engine, dont do it. thumbs down for Hayes Rotary.

Kinda reminds me of those "lifetime warranties" you get with NAPA alternators. Except popping a new one in every year is a little more difficult!

Man I went with autozone cheapy parts... and well... I have replaced two alternators and two starters. My bro went through like 3 sets of brake pads...

They are warrantyed but can be a pain in the ****!

My Hayes engine only got 460 miles per quart of oil from day one. They promised me new parts to rebuild it since they were too busy to rebuild it being before Christmas of 2000. They never sent me the new seals. The side housings had not been resurfaced, and some rotor oil seals looked used. I bought all new internal seals, and had the side housings resurfaced. The E-shaft and rotors were spec and looked at for problems, but could not find any.

So after spending about $1600 more than the original $3600, it still got the same miles per quart. No improvement.

I ended up buying a junkyard 13B-REW and rebuilt it like better than new myself. It has over 10,000 miles of perfect running.

What happened to my Hayes POS engine: I kept everything that bolted to the front side housings, and to the front of the E-shaft. The rest was thrown into the trash as that is what it was!!!!!!

My car had two Hayes engines in it. The first had an oil problem of some sort (previous owner) and was replaced under warranty. After I bought the car and inherited the second engine, one track day failed the water seals despite it never overheating. After limping around on the failed water seals for about 6 months, redline in 4th gear finally catastrophically failed the rear main bearing which trashed just about everything. Not on my top list of builders either.....

Its amazing people still go there to buy engines. This has to be the worst company in the US, as far as building engines. You guys think trained monkeys could do it better? CJ

I was going to say the same thing, what the hell are people doing buying from them. If they haven't heard it on the big list by now, or on here, then they really don't need a rotary car. I remember Chuck's problem on the big list a couple of years ago as I was getting off the big list, but I never heard the end result.

I've heard at least a dozen horror stories about Hayes cutting corners and lying to customers about the parts that were in the engine. In fact, I can't recall ever hearing anything good about a Hayes motor. What drove you guys to buy them?

Well i bought the car with a new engine. The motor was being installed when I went to pick it up, we had to wait about 6 hours till they where done.
I was driving down the highway, looked into the rear view and notice the car was smoking from the exhuast. I look at the temp guage, it was also most 3/4s up. i was about 1/8 a mile from the exit, got off , rolled to the truck stop, call a buddy of mine to come and pick me up with his trailer. When we got the car on the trailer, I notice that there was coolent all over under the car. I never got the car to hot. The motor was also using to much oil from day one, I also was getting around 600 miles per quart.
On top of that, I had to call in work becuase of a hayes engine. Guess what, I was replaced. Becuase of the hayes motor I am now out of transportation without a job. Life ******* sucks.
brian at bnr is going to rebiuld the engine becuase I know i can trust his work.

I had the "pleasure" of taking apart several Hayes engines, due to customer dissatisfaction with the power or just quit too soon. Tremendously apparent the oil control rings were so worn that it had 240,000 miles on them. Used parts. People are paying for new parts and getting junk. And those re-chromed housings are another cause of lack of power. His just dont work.

Yeah has there been any issues with those Teflon encapsulated water seals? I planned on using them on my next motor but if there are issues I'm sticking with stock.

HMMM, and a certain shop you frequent consistantly sends out 100% perfect engines I suppose. Just another happy Pineapple Racing Customer :o.

i use the teflon seals from rotary aviation and have never had a problem with them.

maybe these guys don't understand you have to clean out the coolant seal grooves before you put the new seals in?

only shitty part about them is you have to stretch them. i went too far a couple times and had to stick them in the freezer for an hour to contract them back to fit.

but yea, they rock

I use them in all of my customer engines. Far superior to stock as already mentioned. The critical issue is making sure the o-ring lands are clean and free of old o-ring.
