Turbo II vs. Neon SRT-4... Ouch.

Earlier today, I was merging onto I-405 North (leaving Bellevue), when I saw a silver SRT-4 Neon up ahead in the car-pool lane.

As I neared my unsuspecting prey, I quietly down-shifted into 4th gear, maintaining a speed of around 80mph. When I was about 50 feet behind the Neon and in the next lane over, I prepared my ricer-flyby... I rolled into the throttle and accelerated quickly past the Neon, before releasing the throttle at the Neon's door. This of course was my bait, and a bait that very few ricers in Neon's can resist... I switched lanes and proceeded quickly on--hoping that the Neon's curiousity would get the best of him.

As I glanced into my rear-view mirror I was delighted to see the econo-box give chase...

As I casually weaved through the light traffic, I watched in giddy anticipation as the Neon did the same. Within moments he had resumed his position in the car-pool lane, and me by his side, this time with no traffic in front of us... We rounded a slight bend, and I set the pace--slowing down to about 65 before gently downshifting into 3rd gear, right at around 5k RPM's, or, at the heart of my powerband.

I looked over for the first time and was pleased to see the guy was smiling, with a slight "devilish" look in his eye. I looked at him, nodded and motioned for him to go. I just waited. Sure enough, I heard the down-shift and he was off! I watched as he pulled ahead before I hit the gas. My boost gauge shot to 14psi as I INSTANTLY made up the ground. I ripped quickly through 3rd gear and shifted at 7.5k RPM's. At this point he was almost back to my rear-bumper. I shifted into 4th and continued pulling dramatically ahead, but at around 5k RPM's in 4th gear my clutch gave out completely! Like the engine basically revved to nearly redline, before I let-off and feathered back into it. The best part is, even with this momentary power-loss, the Neon didn't pull ahead, and as my clutch struggled to keep it's grip, I continued to pull away--easing to about 4-5 car-lengths by the time I shut off at the top of 4th gear, or around 125mph.

Needless to say, I enjoyed decimating the Neon, with a slipping clutch at that.

The neon was silver with Altezza style taillights, a full bodykit accenting his FMIC nicely, and who knows what performance mods he had. He also had about 5 or 6 stickers with different brand names on his passenger window.

A note: My clutch has been slipping for about two weeks, or ever since I slightly increased the boost. Luckily it's still very drivable, but it just gives out under a sustained and heavy load. I've got a new one on the way, so I should have it in by this weekend.

My hypothesis is: RX-7 > Just about everything.

Way to pwn the neon n00bs. Sounds like it's time for a new clutch though. Each time it spins like that, especially at high rpms, it's just getting worse. You probably already know that though. It's hard to resist the temptation of slaughtering a wrong-wheel drive dumbestic. :P

Being a previous sohc civic owner... that made me laugh very hard. I've got to use that line some time.
