mazda intake vs aftermarket "12A"

Ill start off with im in the market for intake/ filter options. I have a stock blue filter housing and no longer need any of the ports on it ie emissions ect. I could defiantly weld them and be done but I am exploring options. The car is a track only car running solo's at the moment and I can change filter housings. Ive looked at the offerings from Racing Beat and Bonez, also looked thru the factory Mazda racing catalog and seen the offering of part# 0000-06-7301. Bonez seams to be NLA "as from searching on the forum" and the least likely candidate. witch leaves RB and the Mazda unit. From research the Mazda unit claims +7 hp over a RB but is NLA. Do we think there is truth to that claim, or scrap the idea of buying one and simply build one of my own? I have the tools and materials are easy to get, pick a filter element and run with a design?

The Mazda racing part is just a K&N filter with a fluted bottom plate and top hat. And it had no provision to easily adapt to a cold air feed. The actual Mazda Factory Race setup used IDA weber carbs, a fibreglass basic airbox with mounted on top with a cold air sourced from the right hand side of the radiator. I can try to grab pics if it will help.

I'm sure it would be easy to fabricate something superior to the RB and Mazda round filter units, especially now 3D printed airboxes are pretty accessible. If you do not have class rules preventing it, I would just pick a filter and run with a design.

I know of the design your speaking of for the webber carb I have a pdf copy of the race parts. I'm waiting on a definite answer on rules about what I can and cant have. If its more open than I think it is then i will just fab up a intake/filter assembly and call it a day.

back in the Pro7 days, people did testing and eventually wound up with the stock air cleaner hooked up to a cold air source.
at the ~112hp level the cold air made more difference than having more flow with like the RB setup, but that is at 112hp.

according to my back of the envelope calculation the stock Mazda air cleaner is ok up to about 150hp, over that it doesn't flow enough.
ive seen V8 people add a second snork to the stock air cleaner, which would be kind of clever, but also lots of work

we used two stacked filters in a box drawing air thru the two headlights on the pass side. 87 June Sprints Road America/Elkhart Lake. Daryl Drummond changing the mains on his motor. the airbox was from Roger Mandeville as was most of the car. Daryl's motors ran from 7 to 10,000. nothing less than 7 during the race. Saenz 5 speed dog box. dry sump etc etc my crew Marc and Paul Bushman the guy on the right is me.

Thanks for the input everyone. I made up some intercooler piping that fits in the stock snorkel and routed it up into the nose of the car. Working on a actual ducting box to help the air get in better. I did however get a rudimentary iat setup working and will be connected some tests with this along with other sensors. I located a used rb intake for 20 bucks so why not do my own testing.
