Aftermarket oil filters for the FD.

So then if OEM Mazda oil filters aren't available would aftermarket oil filters be alright to use? Such as Mobil 1's oil filter which costs like freakin $8. It'll probably be just this one time and I'm running RP 20W50 and I wouldn't want any leaks or any sort of inefficiency as a result of using aftermarket oil filters.

Any related experiences anyone?

TIA.

I would wait for the Mazda filter. The Mazda filter shouldnt take long to get in stock. If you absolutely can't wait, put on another filter until the Mazda filter comes in.

My mechanic only likes to use Mazda filters because he's seen the aftermarket ones leak on occasion and plus the black mazda one looks so much more hardcore

come to think of it... I think my K&N oil filter is leaking. I just installed it 2 weeks ago and I've noticed oil sprayed all around under the filter. I guess its back to the OEM Mazda, cheap and it works correctly!!

I use the K&N oil filters too, and I have noticed an oil leak as well around the oil filter pedstal. It only started happening when I switched..........I may have to go back to OEM as well.

Hmmm, I seem to remember trying the Mobil 1 and it did not fit since it was too tall or something.

Stay OEM on the oil filter, I don't think you'll find anyone that disagrees..you can get them for around $6.00 each from Malloy. Order a case while you're at it - the shipping is free.

I've never had any problems with either K&N nor Mobil-1. Neither have ever leaked, but I did tighten them. Sorry, I do not think the $5 OEM filter is even in the same class as $12 K&N and $11 Mobil-1. Oh and they both have the anti-drainback valve. When I have to use a Fram, I get the duoble gaurd for $8 at wallmart and that doesn't leak either. As far as beeing too big, sounds like you got the wrong one. My filters are small.

I just got the standard Fram from O'reily, because I didn't know there where problems with leakage. Mine hasn't leaked.

Good thing I caught this thread though. I'll have to get an OEM as soon as I get back to Texas.

use the second gen rx7 oil filters they are taller. i have used all filters except for the cheap few like fram...okay im lying ive only used four brands of oil filters and i have used both the 3rd gen and 2nd gen filters. never had a problem with them.
bosch
k&n
mobil 1
factory
again that is a total of 8 different oil filters since ive used both the 2nd and third gen. all have worked well, but i noticed i put the wrong spark plug wire(MSD) on the wrong coil when i saw it arcing against the second gen filter. it was my fault but be careful. again, they all work well so dont worry any.

FWIW My understanding is the MAZDA OEM filters are currently being supplied by PUROLATOR, so the PUREOLATOR should be a Good substitute for the OEM Unit. Maybe one of the MAZDA guys on here can correct this info if it it is wrong or out of date.

I change oil every day .. its my job we use federated oil filters and I've never seen one leak as long as it is tightened with the proper wrench. (and isn't crushed by the driver running over something)

FWIW-I've gotten 3 or 4 different batches of oem filters from Malloy. Some were made in Japan, some in Germany, and some in the US. Also different part numbers as well. There is an 01, and an 02 part number, The rest is the same. Blow your friends away with oil filter trivia. All the filters were different design. More holes, smaller holes. Oem filters are available no problem there. Or you could do as posted above, just go to wal-mart and get a fram.

I think NAPA Gold oil filter works the best. I've been

using it since two month ago.

No leaks, nothing.

Works great for 7 bucks.
