easy/cheap homemade coilover/suspension for fb/sa.

Hey guys just wanted to share my latest project. so for a while ive been thinking about making coilovers for my rallycar. i had two consern i didnt want to change the steering geometry and i didnt want to change my wheelhubs wich i have already changes for boltpattern 4x108mm.
I wanted progressive springs and i wanted cheap and easy acces parts.
The great thing about the front shocks is that they har not only adjustable at the springs they har also adjustable in the length that means that im able to adjust the springs for perfect wheigt and perfect rideheight

Here´s what i came up with.
Seat leon 1p/vw golf 5 TA Technics coilovers.
Bilstein rear shocks for vw golf 3

Throw away the rear shocks in the seat kit.
screw off the bottom of the TA Shocks. cut the original strut about 4,5 cm from the cast iron.
the bottom of the shocks is threaded and you need to grind the lower 3 cm of the thread just a little bit. Then you grind and sandpaper the strut just a littebit and the bottom will now fit perfectly.

Now that part is don and you can just screw the coilover back on.
For the top of the spring you take the spring holder from the bilstein kit and weld on a thick washer with 14 mm hole in it. you need tho adjust the sides off the spring holder with a little bit of heat and a hammer just to get it to fit perfectly.
now the thread in the top off the shock isnt long enough for both the washer and a ball join tfor adjustable camberplates but i am gonne solv that problem with a lathemade extender thats gonne be a bit wide in case of a balljoint failing.

now for the rearend. springs in the TA kit is a bit soft but the great thing is thay are 2 inches that meant when you are done fitting them you can buy off self universal springs in the lbs you wish.
The threaded adjusters for the rearend dosnt come with anykind of loking mechanism so i drilled a hole and put in a 3,5 mm allenscrew.
for the top of the spring i made a holder wich i will bring pictures off in the near future..

the rear bilstein dampers doesnt fit perfectly but they are from a car with the same rear wheigt and thay are bilstein. so you are gonna need to extend the thread about 2 cm but thats easy since the thicknes is allready correct for threading. in the bottom the bushing fist with just a couple off washers on each side but i choose to carefully weld on a ball joint...

I am gonne upload some more pictures during the week as i get the finishing touches done and my lower control arms are also gonne be getting balljoint.

Im also gonne upload pictures of my homemade camberplates as soons as the look presentable.

all in all thes complete setup up with shocks and everything set me back. about 550 dollars.
and everything can be done with home tools and a mi welder exept for the extensionpart off the front strut but you only need that if you are making camperplates.

Feel free to ask any questions and comment if im using the wrong words.

Best Regards Rasmus Andersen Denmark

I have to ask even though the thread is old, is it possible to get the car lower than stock height with this solution? I'm located in sweden and suspension parts for these cars are almost impossible to find.
I would like to get my fb a little lower and a tiny bit of camber. But it's not as important as ride height and stiffness.

Cutting the struct tube and making it an adjustable coilover will lower it. The ride is going to be stiffer. It also requires fab work and good welding skills.

Even in this case? His strut looks quite long, and he did say he was doing it for a rally car

There are few threads in the 1st gen section on this topic too. User name 'Carl' posted in a few threads trying different options. One was the Mk1 Golf / Rabbit, another was using Porsche 944 front struts iirc, I vaguely remember something about Toyota MR2 struts as well.

They all follow the same formula as above.

Various options for rear shocks.

You can also extend the shock tower upward. Search on user MustangHammer. Racing Beat years ago use to make a weld in shock tower extension.

BCRacing makes a kit that will convert the shocktube.
