Project looks great Al!! Ive been following it for some months now and it really looks like your knocking out a lot of the labor intensive chores. Motor looks awesome, cant wait to hear it start up through your side exhaust!

I finally started working on the two tunnels, I had been putting this off for a while.
All the framing was made out of 1/2" steel square tubing, the framing on the right side of the tranny is removable as well as the framing for the exhaust shielding.

Heh. I think there is something to be said for starting clean. You don't have to go through all the cutting and the unavoidable disagreements with Mazda on car design.

Keep up the nice work.

your absolutely correct, you just never think you're gonna go this far. somehow this project started as a small weekend project and now I'm on my second year of the project. Who knows what I'll come up with next You always think "oh I just want to get on the track" blah blah blah. Those of you reading this and considering building a racecar DON'T! buy somebody else's project and finish it.

Haha, don't build your racecar! Kind of ironic your tag says 'Built not bought!' and proud of it i'm sure. Unless you love building and fabricating as it looks like BigAl does, he's right. I want to get out on the track too, but am loving my build..

Truer words have never been spoken. Some people do like building the car though. I think you are one of them

guilty as charged! I'm at Daytona for the 24hrs and I'm going crazy trying to remember all the stuff I'm learning just going pit to pit. I always leave a race with different ideas.

Here you see the brackets we made, we welded solid round stock to the bottom of the rad and used some old radiator bushings from by buddies evo 8 then fabbed up these brackets, you can see a piece of the card board we used to mock up the brackets.

other side

This is the front bracket, it's uses a cotter pin to lock down the radiator, with no hoses or water I can remove the rad in less than a second. I'm ready for those radiator removal races!

im curious why you setup your rad at that angle and not the inverse? id imagine you would get the same amount of cooling but with added downforce. also with out a small release in the shroud area for air to go through i would imagine it would almost act as an air damn. i understand that it's supposed to direct air flow in but at the same time when you are at high speed it would hinder aerodynamics bc only so much air can flow through. im no expert though just kinda curious why you fabbed it that way.

It's not a spoiler. It's a radiator. Air goes through it, and the shroud would prevent the runoff from updrafting.

Stock FD radiators are angled as such. I wouldn't be surprised if he vented the radiator via the hood. So the hot side of the radiator would need to point towards the hood. As it does. This would reduce lift.

The radiator will indeed act as an air damn to some degree. A high pressure system will build in front of the radiator. But, that's no reason to allow air a path to escape. That high pressure system is what forces the air through the radiator.

Well said. Yes, I'm using the hood grill from my buddies Evo 8 to vent the air from the rad. At our level I'm more concerned with cooling (think 3 rotor), aero (although important) is lower on the list of priorities.

thanks to all for the kind words! we worked on the car yesterday, finally finished the framing for the exhaust and tranny tunnels. We're very happy with the finished product. Very glad we switched to the 1/2" material vs the 3/4" stuff, it all turned out very sturdy.

Next we're gonna seal off the firewall and the the floor.

it looks the same as above, just a few more pieces of 1/2 tubing. I haven't done the sheet metal portion yet. I'm hoping to have that done in the next couple of weeks.

the diff is an 03-04 Cobra, and the cradle is from Justin Sanberg (do a search, he's a member on this board)
