BigAl's FD 20B racecar project

Some of you might remember Rob20Rx7 fd racecar, we both had alot of fun building that car and certainly alot of fun driving it, well now we're on to the next BIG adventure! We've started on my racecar, it's a 94 FD that I picked up from a board member, we're only in the infant stages but we are excited. The engine will be a 20b by CLR Motorsports (I've been friends with Carlos for many years and in my opinion Carlos is the authority in rotary engine development!) I'll be making the headers and manifolds but I'll leave the motor itself to the expert! The tranny will be a Jerico 4 speed which I got a really good deal on, these trannies are made for nascar and are capable of holding just about any horsepower a n/a rotary can dishout. The diff is going to be a Cobra using one of the subframes from a groupbuy over on V8Rx7forums. The suspension will consist of Penske struts and fabricated adjustable blade type sway bars. The list is long and unfortunately still a list so I'll be posting pictures as things happen! I promise to be diligent about taking pictures.

unfortunately I lost the very first pictures I took of the car but they didn't look much different than these, except these already have the rollcage installed. Cage was done by a guy up in Palm Beach, good work and reasonably priced.

Well it's been over a month since I last posted but we have been working on the racecar, some of you might have noticed Rob posted a few pics on his 4rotor thread. We spent a whole day with the master himself Carlos Lopez from CLR Motorsports. After the dust settled, the smoke cleared and you brushed away all the filings this is what we had left, in the pics you see my three housings and Rob's four housings. We've done alot of work on the car itself, I'll be posting pictures of that really soon!

Enjoy!

Interesting project. Subscribing to this.

Might I ask how much you ended up paying for the rollcage fab?

A little progress

As promised here are some pics of some of the work we've done in the past few weeks.

Here is the stripped down engine that we re-assembled for mock up purposes, headers, manifolds etc...

Here she is, where she belongs. If you look closely you can almost see the motor mounts, they were alot of trouble but we're happy with the end result

Name: DSC_0044.jpg
Views: 765
Size: 156.1 KB

we've also received something to put behind the engine

Size: 85.2 KB

I'll have a few more pics in a few days, we're having alot of fun figuring out the hydraulic throw out bearing and the tranny adapter.

Well we've been working, and here is the proof.

We finally got the tranny mated to the engine

Name: DSC_0045.jpg
Views: 771
Size: 112.6 KB

we had to machine the adapter to half the size (3 hours on the lathe, thanks Laz)

Name: DSC_0026.jpg
Views: 779
Size: 93.3 KB

Here you can see how nice the clearance work came out on the tranny

Name: DSC_0037.jpg
Views: 782
Size: 74.9 KB

Another shot showing the tranny crossmember we fabbed up

Name: DSC_0039.jpg
Views: 826
Size: 75.6 KB

here is a pic of the new flywheel and clutch, the trouble with this set up was the T/O bearing, it was a real PIA to figure out, but we did.

Name: DSC_0022.jpg
Views: 817
Size: 97.7 KB

We had to machine a special bushing so it would center the bearing (big thanks to Laz)

Name: DSC_0019.jpg
Views: 770
Size: 87.2 KB

Next on the list is the differential, seat, pedals, steering column and after going to an SCCA regional race this weekend I found out my motor is too far back so new motor mounts are in the near future.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

We've been working pretty hard this week, below are a few examples.

Here you can see the diff is already installed, we used the cradle from Justin Sanberg (fit like a glove)

And we also hung the pedals

Stay tuned, we received some cool parts which we'll be installing soon.

Good question, originally my plan was to run GT-1 but because of my engine setback I'll probably end up in SP-O (kind of a run whacha brung class). my goal is to be on the track having fun, wherever "they" put me will be fine with me.

"with all these mods" what do ya mean? it's stock except for the exhaust "

lol, either way, awesome car!

I was reading the old posts to see where it belongs, especially after those mods. I think it belongs in the scca KAC group. The "Kick *** Car" section. haha
