To keep it Mazda, how about the SOHC 4.0L V6 that came in the Mazda B4000? Something I'm thinking about swapping into, considering how strong the engine was when my brother had it in his '94 Ranger Extra Cab 2WD.
What about other Mazda engines? Has anyone used other Mazda engines?

Huh? Dry weight for a LS1 is 410lbs. Dry weight for a 4.0L SOHC is between 376 and 400 lbs. I want to keep it Mazda, but not be terribly expensive, something I can find in a junkyard, and will produce decent horsepower numbers (275-300 WHP is what I call decent).
go for it.
the Miata motor might be a good option too but not much powaaaaaah without boost.
GM v6's have been done and well documented and are very cheap as well so if you can get over your aversion to non-mazda engines for your FC then give a gm v6 a try.

Well, the only reason I want to stick with Mazda engines is because of the Mazdaspeed contingency I could get. I plan on racing this car in Redline Time Attack in Modified RWD. I may just go for it (building a non-Mazda engine), since I do have easier access to Ford parts and finding Ford Junkyard parts is just as easy.
^^^ My thoughts exactly.
If you're going for an official mazda motor, you might want to look elsewhere since the engine in the B series truck is in-fact a ford motor.
However it will do the job, if all you desire is a motor that was stock equipment in a mazda vehicle..

Well, this is odd, I cannot find the requirement about a Mazda must have a Mazda engine anymore. The only place I see it is from the Formula X Time Attack at New Jersey, but not on any of Mazdaspeeds' official forms or on their website.
I've also done some more research and have found that the Ford 5.0 V8 is lighter and can produce the same amount of power that I'm looking for with relatively small upgrades, is just a reliable (if not, more so), and just as easy to find for an even smaller price (for a stock, untouched engine).
Developing the 4.0L V6 for the RX sounds like an exciting idea for me, but I think I need to stick with what's already done so I can keep it as so much of a money pit.
