Duh Duh Duh.......

Last night after a few games of bowling with kettleman a terrible thing happened. We pulled out of the parking lot and kettleman got a little sideways(as he always does). So as I was following him right after the corner I punched it. And this is what I hear...

Clink... clink clink... clink.

My heart dropped as well did the idle. I pulled up to the stop light as my poor engine was gasping for air. I had just blown an apex seal.

Luckily Kettleman was not too faraway at this point and we called him up and pulled over to diagnose the problem. And yep it was evident that the motor was blown.

Driving home I could notice the power loss...going 60 in third fully floored. Hey at least I know what it feels like to drive a 12a now.(sorry couldn't resist)

On the ride back I was smiling ear to ear and my passanger asked..."you seem awfully happy for your car just breaking" And indeed I was. And here is the reason.

Folk I want to introduce my next project: Project R.E.V.(Rotary Engine Vehicle)

Here is what it includes:

j-spec 13bt motor. fully dismantled and ported.

t66 or t70 turbo with an aftermarket front mount intercooler

Small incognito(but still effective) roll cage

I was hoping to push 300hp! Third gens here I come yahoo.

Sorry Coldeblue's I think that I am going turbo. Pssssssttt.

No need to be sorry Zzzzzzz. Turbos are fun too. Its probably best you go Turbo anyway. Superchargers seem to be more of a pain in the *** anyway. Its a long frustrating road with them. Now that I own one of each Supercharger/Turbo I can appreciate each. I do know that Im more discouraged with the blower than the Turbo. Someones gotta love the supercharger more, so I guess thats me.

I like the Turbo for the daily driving and fun, but theres that special place in my heart for the supercharger that will never go away till its right.

Good luck with your project cant wait to see ya. Keep updates for all of us.

That sucks but glad to hear you're keeping a positive outlook on this. Can't wait to see the progress of this project.

Oh yeah there are some big plans in mind. Just have to work a few things out before the whole process begins. The thing that really kicks me is it was running great and then all of a sudden pop it was gone. I heard that conoco phillis put out some bad gas that caused the vehicles injectors to clog up and lose acceleration. Not really sure though. Kettleman I should not have filled up with you at safeway!!!! I put 92 in it but now it might have caused the engine failure. Anyone know who is safeways fuel provider? Conoco offers to pay for all damages if you can prove it was their gas. Ie date of purchase and reciept and diagnoses from a shop.

What ever happens TII is going on the car. It is time for more Hp!

Woundup how was your conversion and how many hours did you put into it. Is installing the S5 ECU hard or should I just go with a standalone. I am looking for more of a "plug and play" route to start so that I can get it tuned.

I will keep you informed.

Not to get you down, but this is going to be a huge and expesive project from the sounds of things. Don't expect the car to be up soon or running great right off the bat. Its going to take some time and work.

You have a lot of help in your area and more then a few options for help and your motor. It also looks like you have a DD so this car can be down for some time. Good Luck and this beast will be a blast when finished.

from what I have heard from the GT garage guy if you are going to use a standalone then go with microtech. I would definately get ahold of woundup seeing as he is running a TII in his 1st gen. and find out the ups and downs of his setup. Make sure to keep us all posted on the progress.

Sounds like a typical Conoco thing (I used to work for them). The provider of Safeway gas is Reinhard which everyone uses every now and then (my station used then about 40% of the time). I swear the whole gas thing is a big scheme and it's all sold under the same company but resold with different brances.

What the hell were you running 92 for anyway? I'd wager that it wasn't the gas, simply because most of the time 'bad gas' is contaminated with water. This wouldn't cause your engine to blow, just be extremely down on power/etc.

I have always run 92. And as well as the original owner before me. Many people say that it does nothing for anything that is N/A however I would rather not take the chance and just pay a little more. In my experience thigs tend to go wrong when you change them up.

Joe I will give you a run but I heard that you are pretty nuts on the road sometimes. Not to mention with that single setup I do not think that I will have a chance. I do have a couple other modes of transportation and actually those are my everyday drivers the rx is just for weekends and fun little trips. like apple blossom I am aware of the complexity of the project, luckily I have a GSL-SE! Props to woundup I an most definetly going to have to ask him about common troubles that he had during the build up.

I think that I will be going stand alone since I have heard from quite a few people that the wiring from an S5 is quite a pain in the ****. Microteks are nice if you want to spend over a grand. Even though I have seen a microtek on codeblue2's car and it is really sweet I would rather go with a megasquirt. Still have to do some research but I think that is going to be the route that I will take. As far as installation I do not think I will be doing the ECU. Most of you know Lopy(sp) and he has dealt with them before and seemed to be fairly proficient with them. Megasquirt are quite a bit cheaper and fairly equilavent in performance to the megasquirt. I was also planning to have him rip apart the block and check it out just to make sure that I did not get myself into a bad situation. It would suck to place a new engine in a car and then have to pop a seal.

glad to hear you are wanting to use megasquirt. I was going to mention it but the support on rotary engines to date as far as I am aware is not complete. I believe jeff20b on the forums has used megasquirt so try and get a hold of him and also do some research. I wanted to do cheap and easy FI with megasquirt by running a holley throttle body injection setup on my rb holley manifold. If I do not convert to 13b then that will probably be my FI plan for the future.

They're working on ignition right now, they've got it working but it's not perfected and trailing support isn't finished yet. Check out the forums for more info (http:/www.msefi.com).

Also, just for clarification, running less than 92 on an n/a is perfectly fine, you can run damn near 35-40* of total advance and not detonate or do any harm on them, generally they will misfire and sputter before they ever get near to doing damage. I do understand what you mean though, but it's a little bit on the costly side for something that's really non-existant.

Yeah I agree...I just have no prob spending the extra amount on a little better gas Kettleman used to squak when I would reach for that 92 handle. I will check out the site and see if I can understand it. Electronics are not my forte.

Still waiting for woundup to chime in.....
