Question sputtering from 1/2 to full throttle...HELP!

yo whats up everyone im just about to buy 1993 rx7 and the car has been sitting for quite some time now. from what the guy tells me he starts it up once in a while and drives it around the block. he hasnt changed the oils, gas, plugs or any plug wires since he let it sit about a year and a half ago. apparently the car wasnt sputtering from 1/2 to full throttle when he parked it. i went to drive it one day and the car runs PERFECTLY fine, no rust, and no mods to the engine. the rx7 runs perfectly fine and shifts through all gears very nicely but after you hit the gas more than half way to the floor it starts to sputter. i brought one of my buddies to see it also and he says that it mighte be a intake problem and wont be too much to fix up. im sure it needs a standard tune up and all but does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? the severity of it and if it will cost me a arm and a leg to fix? maybe its not worth the hassel of buying the car!?

any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

thanks guys!

You can try to see if your wires are good. It might be off timing just a bit. If the previous owner has yet to change all the basic things like oil, plugs, and wires, a tune up sounds about right to get your car in good working condition. It wouln't cost an arm and a leg. Just your usual repairs for a car of that age.

BC sputtering

It shouldn't I mean if it has been sitting for awhile, stuff will happen. I'd let it warm up good and maybe try to go for some noraml driving for awhile. till everything seems good.

it shouldn't take much to get it going. cleaning the carb. and maybe the shutter valve being replaced will do wonders

you never really find honest mechanics these days... espicially when someone is trying to get them bucks these days... if its the turbo, thats a pretty pricey job, so most likely they were trying to squeeze some bucks out of you. Would you describe your self as a person who looks or often precieved as having "deep pockets"? They were probably thinking, "we can get this fool." Most shops try to get a more out of you than you should already be paying for the job.. Especially at dealerships, them dudes are CUTTHROAT.

Actually, dealers frequently MISdiagnose boost problems as being turbo problems. Dealers have replaced a lot of turbochargers and not solved the problem when the real issue is a turbo control component. Dealers usually can't provide adequate service for these cars, and frankly I think many of them think they know more than the really do. The Mazda service manual doesn't give very good information to diagnose and solve boost problems.

But the issue could still be serious and expensive. I recommend you take it to a rotary shop of your choosing (not a dealer) for a full inspection.

I don't believe new owners should buy FDs with problems. It takes some experience to get through FD problems without wasting huge amounts of time and money.
