speedometer not working

heres the story:

my new battery exploded acid on my 88 rx7 NA because it was not the rite size, it was smaller
then my speedometer went out

gas, engine temp, battery voltage, oil pump and the other lights that come on when u put the key into the on switch in the ignition

1.I checked for fuses inside and outside in the engine bay: still not the problem
2.My friend at the smog shop tested the ignition coil both trailing and leading and said they were still good
3. I checked for any wires that are w/ the battery cables and found nothing disconnected or blown

so does anybody have any ideas??

Car misfires and wont pass smog

My friend at the smog shop said my car is misfiring at idle
The HC (something like that) level was suppose to be 100 or less but the car is at 1900 wtf? Its running way too rich
He tested the ignition coils and spark plugs and doesnt really know

theres no vacuum leaks
could it be the air pump or MAF??

any ideas?? im tryin to get this car to pass smog by the end of Sept.

Search for "variable resistor", proper adjustment of this might help smooth out your idle. I would replace the spark plugs as well; old plugs can cause misfires.

The speedometer is mechanical and depends on the speedometer cable, which runs through the firewall, down along the driver-side frame rail, and plugs into the back of the transmission. Make sure it is not severed or unscrewed from the transmission. Though if unscrewed, you would have a major oil leak from the transmission.

I checked my speedometer cable and its on tight

speedometer works but everything else doesnt like rpm, gas, battery, oil pump
I checked the wires behind the gauge and found no blown wires
I also looked for other blown wires and fuses in the engine bay and still nothing.

could it be the gauge cluster itself??

I am guessing you fried your board somewhere or maybe even are grounding out somewhere. I am going to say that the problem is definetly in the electrical side of it since you blew a battery. I always use high quality batteries in my vehicles because of all the electronics that they now put into them.

Just start searching for any wires with missing covers, chances are you have a bad wire now that your battery blew.

Sure, your friendly Mazda parts department. Or try eBay if you dare.
