New member. Quick Summary, Bought a 79 RX7 12A with 220KM that has been sitting in a storage shed for 6 years.
I am able to get it started however it is running very rough. Lots of smoke and is dumping gas out a hole in the tail pipe where the exhaust headers meet the cat.
As I mentioned in my introduction post I am by no means a mechanic more or less a hobbyist. I have a basic understanding of carbs and wankle engines so apologies in advance if my post is riddled with inaccuracies.
My thinking is perhaps something is off with the timing or a faulty distributor again I am not 100% sure.
I did remove the plugs and found them wet with un-burned fuel. When I went to replug in the wires I referenced the following link on the plug wire order to perhaps rule out some crossed wires.
The link shows the following however when I wired it up like this the car would not fire.
After referencing my notes I took I put the plug wires back in the order they where before I messed with it and the car fired right up.
I remember hearing that sometime people accidentally install the distributor caps on 180 degrees backwards?
Anyways If someone could point me in the right direction, Hoping its not the apex seals.
I also have uploaded a short clip to youtube so you can see what I mean when I say a lot of smoke.
So I've been reading alot of the forums and I believe the white smoke is from coolant leaking into the combustion chamber which is causing failure of ign hence the reason I have a ton of fluids leaking out the exhaust joint. The only mystery is why my wiring doesn't connect like it should. Someone feel free to let me know if I'm wrong about the coolant leak 🤣
BTW your wire pictures show the pick up distributer update from 1981. Search for the wire diagramm 1978 to 1980. It' s different. Pherhaps the two spark coil + wire where inverted. The different between L1 and T1 is nearly the same as between L1 and L2. Sorry my bad english hope you get some inspiration.
For a 79, the first diagram is correct except that the distributor cap is not "clocked" correctly. If you rotate the cap counter clockwise so that the T connection is about where the T2 is depicted (8 o'clock while standing along the drivers fender) you'll have the 79 points diagram.
The cap should be clocked like the 2nd diagram. That 2nd diagram isn't correct on how its hooked up to the housings for a 79.
