rx7 carburetor upgrade
well first off u'll need to get a holley intake from RB or mazdatrix, unless u have the know how to take an adapter plate that the edelbrock will bolt to and weld it to the stock 12a intake. then they'll probably be some grinding involved to match up the runners with the adapter. then u have the omp lines to deal with. or just block it off and premix.
Hey ghost I was wondering if there is anything simple that can be done to help tune a carburetor that has idle troubles and power bogging. I've just gotten a 1982 rx7 and the previous owner described the carb as being gummed up and just needing a carb kit to fix it. Currently the car idles at 1500-1700 rpms. Obviously too high but done so that the car could run without stalling.

Wide band is a big help. Before the wide band I relied on vacuum gauge. Idle rpm is a mix of throttle position and timing. Increasing the timing for preformance will make it idle faster, I use a msd 6al 2 programable that let's me dial back timing at idle. Most of the carbs I've worked on required the idle transfer slot to be extended after the throttle possition and idle has been set.
Holley carb
I change the idle air bleeds which helps it hold steady a/f ratio from idle to main jet. Let me know if you want more info on the air bleeds. The idle circuit is active and dominates from idle to about 3,000rpm then its mostly main jets. Changing the main jets also required idle adjustment. My FC averages 17-18mpg
The accelerator pump is key to getting the secondary jetting right. Too big it will flood the motor, then run lean in the higher gears. For holley use a pink cam screw it to the white cam using number 3 hole and shave it on a grinder to near same profile. It works best when you add a bit of plastic to make it more aggressive off idle. The white cam is too aggressive off idle and wastes lots of fuel, it can be shaved which also works well.

If it's a nikki, buy a rebuild kit and rebuild it. There are helpful threads to be found in the first gen section. It's not difficult. If your exhaust is stock there is nothing to be gained by modifying the carb. A simple rebuild will work wonders, I guarantee. The Nikki is the best 12a fuel delivery/metering device available.
Good info! Im just getting into the rx7 life and carburetors too want to learn how to tune them. And get the most out of mine that i can. I have a 1983. Was just going to get a rebuild kit for it and dig in and learn as i go. Any more info on this would be awsome

Digging thru some old threads obviously but saw you mentioned DE do you have a shop out there? I'm in NJ
I have a bogging 4 barrel carb. On my 1983 rx7 12A
I just bought this car with this carb. In it. Since I got her she boggs when you step on the gas, and again at 2500 to 3000 rpms in all gears. Can you help me adjust this carb.?
Charles, I've been here every day for two years and never heard of ghost1000 before. His last post on this topic was 6 years ago. Post a new thread in the 1st gen section and you'll get answers to your questions.
Go back to the main menu. Scroll down through the different sections until you find the right category ( I assume you're be looking for 1st gen). When that opens there are some sub-forums at the top (general discussion, archives, build threads, etc). Ignore those for now. Below that is a blue bar that says "start a new thread" or something like that. Click it and you're off to the races! Every section has a "start new thread" bar at the top. The classifieds, the racing section, etc etc..
Make sure you start off by telling people what year and model your car is if asking technical advice.. sometimes people just say "I bought new brakes and they dont fit. Why?" Well some trims use different size brakes, so you have to be more specific. So anyway, the more info you can give, the faster you'll get a good answer. And pictures of your car really help. "My car has a funny thing under the hood" isn't as good as showing us a pic of that funny thing.
