Rebuild thoughts...

I just picked up a 91 NA for cheap. The guy had no idea what was wrong with the thing. As soon as i get home, im going to do a compression test. It will fire up, but idles very bad, wont tack up past 3000, then just dies. I removed the lower plug towards the front last night and it smelled like straight gas and had oil on it Today i got a compression tester from a friend. Im already thinking bad things Anyways, if the apex seals, rotors, and housing etc are gone, is it cost effective to just rebuild what i have or just buy another motor? maybe a 13b-T? Thanks ahead of time for any and all input.

Well it looks like a rebuild or new motor. Front rotor is completely dead, didn't even register on the gage. The rear rotor was more like 80, 20, 15 psi.

Even if you buy another motor, why wouldn't you rebuild it or have it rebuilt? Why put another questionable motor in the car?

To have someone rebuild my NA local, it will cost me about 1500 to 1700. Or I could pick up one of those JDM 13b turbo II's for about 1400. Has anyone ever picked one up before? They claim to have low miles on them. Or I could do it myself. I'm a machinist with access to a wire EDM and a couple of CNC mills and lathes for custom parts. But I haven't been able to find solid pricing on good rotors and housings. Just not sure which way to go from here ??

JDM engines would most likely need to be rebuilt too.
They are crap in a crate.Look up some of the posts on them,I have stated many times you get a lawn ornament about 99% of the time.

Not to mention that a 13b-t is not a direct swap, it is an engine conversion that costs a lot more than a rebuild.

The internal parts (rotor seals, etc.) are the same NA and turbo. However the external gaskets are not (ie. intake manifold gaskets). So while you can use an NA rebuild kit on a turbo, or a turbo rebuild kit on an NA, you'll need to buy a bunch of extra gaskets to actually put the engine back in the car.
