I just read an awesome thread on putting a turbo on an na engine. It sounds like something I might cosider doing to my 90GXL. It sounds like it's ok to do at low psi. But how safe is it to upgrade other things like the exhaust or the intake and innercooler after having put on the turbo? Won't upgrading these thing create greater boost presure inside the engine?

It is my opinion that turbocharging the NA to run low boost isn't worth the hassle. It depends on what you consider to be low boost and from what turbo though. As an example, I think it is crazy to bolt on the stock turbo and run 5 PSI.
A turbocharged NA will have the same upgrade path as a factory turbo car. Start upgrading the exhaust and other components and you will have to address the fuel system. Boost will most likely be raised and thus the car will require more fuel.

I see. I thought that was most likely the case after trying to upgrade anything. Too me it sounds like it is more cost effective to boost the the na i already have rather than buying a t2 engine and tranny and have to rebuild. It just dosent sound like it is safe to increase the boost because of the na higher compression ratios. Maybe I'll end up just going with the t2 engine in the end though. I always wanted a true s5 t2. Ha.

[QUOTE=funkjaw;9728821]If you use an S4 or S5 turbo you will have problems with boost creep (S4) and minor boost creep (S5) after putting on a larger exhaust.[/QUO
What exactly is boost creep. Is that the same as turbo lag?

Thanks for the info. Very good to know. So how can boost creep and spike be prevented? Won't a blow off valve upgrade help to regulate boost levels?

You have to port the waste gate if you use an S4 or S5 turbo and waste gate to prevent boost creep.

I don't understand how her insurance can decide what to do with your car? Unless insurance operates in a backwards and ridiculous way in the USA? Should not your insurance be making that decision? And if you can supply them with receipts which prove the value of your car, it probably won't be totalled unless the damage is catastrophic.

You can insure a car for whatever you want. You will just fork over bigger payments. Liability coverage is only to keep you legal so that if you hit someone else, your insurance will pay for the damage and the person won't sue you. Full coverage will cover the damage no matter the cause but you will pay double if not triple in some cases what you would for liability insurance. Also, they don't have to total your car. Total just means that's how much they will give you for the whole car if the damage is like a half or a third of what the whole car is worth. If you like they will cut you a check for a portion of the damage and you can use that to fix it. I guess the op didn't know that like a lot of people in this country.
