GA Just got an rx7 (2nd gen) and have a question about turbo...

Okay, so I just got an 87' rx7. The car is completely stock and it is non turbo. I really want to make it turbo but I need some opinions and expert advice. Should I (a) buy the whole turbo kit for the NON turbo engine I have now (b) get a turbo engine and swap it with the one I have now or (c) not even worry about turbo and not try to install it.

Also, is there anyway you can rebuild a non turbo rotary engine and make it turbo?

Thanks,

Hannah

You are gonna have to search for this stuff my friend.
Try www.aaroncake.net This man made an N/A to TII conversion, successfully.
But Honestly,This has been Covered More times than Paris Hilton's Coke scandal!
there is NO Turbo KIT available.
You can modify the engine to accept a turbo.
The easiest thing is to Buy a TII!.the next way is to Drop in a TII engine and it's supporting parts.
The 87 will accept a Turbo Engine without having to rip out the engine Harness(ECU harness). If your car is in good shape and drives well, etc, then I would pursue an Engine, and build the car up.

N/A Rx7s have great Hp potential. Save your money and start looking on line for exhaust and intake mods. Unless you are looking for over 300HP witch is unnecessay unless you are in to drag racing.

Alright, so I do have the money for the TII and I should buy and install this first before doing any other mods correct?

Thanks for all the replies btw

You just GOT the car.
You know the BEST advice that you are Gonna get is: DRIVE IT!
Seriously! .Just take the car and go driving!.Forget about everyone else telling ya to Put THIS and THAT on the car..DRIVE IT First,Then decide if you really want to Spent a Shitload of Money on a 25 year old car.
The Money put Into the car is not gonna make the car more valuable. It will just be a car with a bunch of Expensive aftermarket parts on it.
The only way to Get the money Back is to Part the car.
..NOW,as far as putting a TII engine into it,It is Up to you.
But,I wouldn't just Go throwing parts into the car without doing Research.
Read through the Sec Gen Specific Section and the Sec Gen Archives. There is an Endless amount of Info in there that will Mesmerize you!
You can ask all the questions you want, but you are the one that is gonna be Driving the car,so instead of getting a myriad of answers from Soup to Nuts,Be sure that you are going to be aware of what you are getting yourself into.
I wish you the Best of Luck For you and your car.
Remember,Maintain it,and it will Treat you like a King...Neglect it,and it will Eat your Wallet up like a Hooker on Crack!.
Cheers STYX!~

i reccomend freshening up the suspension (new springs, shocks, thicker sway bars, replace every damn bushing possible, and delete the DTSS) and see how you like the car then. theres no point in being faster with worn suspension parts making it feel like a 4000lb car

300 HP, Unnecessary???? I have a few daily drivin mustangs with well over 500HP and are perfectly drivable and fun as hell, even the new saab has 305HP I think the more streetable power you can get the better as long as its reliable.

depends on the weight of the car. a 3000lb car does not need 500HP

I fully agree...There is nothing necessary about a 500HP RX-7 as a daily driver. The level of performance is insane compared to almost everything else on the road. It is almost disappointing in a way, because there is nowhere that this power can be unleashed.

Now, to the OP, the best advice if you want a turbo RX-7 is to buy a TII from the start. Failing that, if you find maybe a PERFECT NA shell, you can do a TII swap. That is by far the easiest way to go, as opposed to turbocharging the NA engine which requires a significant amount of fabrication.

Can I swap a Turbo engine/Jspec engine/13BT/etc into my Non Turbo?
Yes, check these links:

http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/ro...conversion.htm

What Turbo kits can I add onto my non turbo RX-7?
There are no longer kits formally made at the time of this post, however there are companies from time to time that do make available non turbo to Turbo Kits. Because most of these companies stop building the kits, or go out of business in short time, it is impossible to keep active links for them.

Most people that turbo a non turbo make their own kits:
Using the stock TII turbo, exhaust manifold with spacer, NA intakes and NA ECU:

All depends on the driver I guess!

To each their own needs. Im not looking for a car that will beat any street v8 i run across that wants to race in a straight line.
