Ok so ill begin with I bought the car in spring and have been re-doing many rigged items on the car and doing maintence items along with a little stripping. The car came with a e-fan and a week ago I deleted the entire ac system. The past weekend I dis the freeze plug mod to stop a leaking inyake gasket. Now the temp gauge reads right at the second line for the cold mark. It used to read a quarter when fully warmed up (which was perfect) but when I went to hardees and waited in line for 15 min while everyone behind me tried to place their order over the rotarys sweet sound I noticed for the first time ever it was at the halfway mark. It hasnt done that even on the 100+ days. I thought about adjusting when the fan kicks in but wouldnt that make long idleing stops worse?

 

Are you sure your fan is cooling it enough? Water pump good? Half way isn't that high , on an 86-88 it's about 200 degrees.

With the engine sitting running it's heat soaking, how hot was it outside(that plays a role in how hot you run) if the fans not strong enough it will not provide efficient cooling.

Other than that check your coolant/oil levels. Oil actually helps cool the engine.

The worst is the coolant seals are going , but I'd hope its something else.

are yo sure your electric fan is coming on ?

 

The fan kicks on when I can get the car to actually get up to temp. Im having a problem of it running to cool. Its baffled everyone so far. As to why it went up halfway at the drive through im not sure. Im trying to keep from tearing into something on the car for a few weeks. $$$ but the fan works great when it gets a chance to kick on. With temps outside getting lower 40 at night 70 in the day im afraid the car is going to be running to cool and cause harm.

 

If you're running without a thermostat that could cause over cooling .

When it got up to the halfway mark, was the fan running or not?

Replace your thermostat with one from the Mazda dealership (any other type can be sketchy).

I would check the thermostat to see if it's stuck open and test it to seen when it opens if it's not stuck. Just put it in a pan of water and heat it up clip a cheap cooking thermometer to thermostat and watch for when it opens. If it needs to be replaced test the new one same say. Sure beats pulling it back out if it don't work right.

 

I guess ill just have to tear Into some things till I find the problem. Thinking of covering the bottom of the radiator to help with the over cooling while driving till I can check some things. I also just wanted to say I appreciate the help guys.

Im just surprised nobody else so far has had this problem. Factory radiator with e-fan, ac delete, freeze plug mod, and as much as I can tell a oem water pump. No fancy coolant additives. Ive just never had this problem or heard of it before so its baffling. Im just the type to think about a problem till I come up with 1-2 solutions then dig in.
