at what time does it make this sound? during acceleration? deceleration? when turning? going over bumps?

give us a bit more info on when it happens, back when i bought my 7 it had a clunk and a wooshing sound at high speeds, it turned out i was loosing the bolts that held the ring gear on the differential and i was eating them up, that was the clunk. when i pulled it out i had one bolt left. pull the diff and inspect it.

that sounds like its time to rebuild your diff. by the way if you can pull the complete live axle out its going to be much easier to put the diff back on, unless you have a lift. its pita to put back on, ive pulled mines twice trust me.
