Question What clutch setup are you using?

So I am swapping drivelines after two failed n/a transmissions. Currently I have the n/a ACT Street/Strip Disk with Heavy Duty Pressure Plate. It felt better than stock and held up well. But now I need to get one to fit the T2 transmission. I am also looking at lightweight flywheels. I was thinking about the ACT six puck disk or the Exedy kits, I have never ran a puck clutch before. Will I notice a big difference, will the new flywheel make it more noticeable? Also, where is the best places to get these parts from these days? Its been such a long time since I needed parts, and its making me feel old. I use to buy a lot from rx7strore but they don't even list flywheels and corksport looks like they are more of mazda 3's and 6's thse days. At least Racing Beat still has flywheels.

will it be more noticeable? yes, quite. to the point of not doing it because they are annoyingly grippy, too grippy to the point that they self destruct in street driving.

stick with an ACT full face disc.

if you REALLY feel the need i have a turbo 3 puck sprung racing beat that is virtually new and just collecting dust on the shelf i will sell for a decent price. has like maybe 100 miles on it...

I had a stock clutch in my t2. I bought a lightly used stg.2 HD exedy. I had tried the clutch beforehand in my friends car. He had a lightweight aluminum flywheel to go with it too. I opted to keep the stock flywheel.

The stg 2 HD has very little play compared to stock. It is basically on/off so you either need to launch the car from a stop or ride the clutch to get going. It also chatters as it bites.

There was a huge difference between flywheels too. It is much easier to take off with the stock heavy flywheel as it gives the engine slightly more inertia.

With the lightweight flywheel you need to be on the throttle as you let off the clutch whereas OEM as long as you have some rpm you can let off the clutch.

Well I really am tired of replacing transmissions, so I guess I will stick to the ACT full disk clutch to go easier on them. Maybe I will go with the ACT Prolite Xact Flywheel also...

as AmT said i prefer a stock flywheel for a mostly street driven car. my prolite is annoying in traffic even with a full faced disc as i have to feather the throttle.

as for the tranny, you won't break a TII tranny unless you really are beating the living **** out of it, or have over 500whp. sure you are frustruated with the n/a transmission but there is no comparison between these 2 trannies, aside from 5th gear breaking the syncro if you race it and mis-shift into 5th from 2nd while mashing the shifter with all your weight.

I was always fairly hard on the street driving side of it, and this was my weekend autocross car. But shortly after I added the nitrous I lost 1st and 2nd gear in one crazy traction grab out of the hole one day. I just want the driveline to hold up. I thought of the ACT Prolite Xact Flywheel because it is still made of steel and I don't have a stock flywheel.

that is still mild for a turbo transmission to handle, the n/a is very unforgiving to any sort of abuse. my TII transmission has ~220k miles and has never been opened up, i also don't exactly baby it and the car makes twice the factory horsepower.

I bought the most basic ACT clutch and pressure plate for my TII rebuild recently from Banzai Racing (they had the cheapest price around. I searched for days!) I've only been able to take the car around the block so far, but it feels stock with maybe a little more bite to it. For less than 300 hp and street driven, it is what I would recommend.

ACT HD Clutch Kit (86-91 RX-7)

Top one on the page. Unless it's a full track car, stay away from any pucks. Lighter flywheel is up to you, though I'd suggest staying with the stock one. You want your sports car to be fun, not a pain in the *** to drive.
