'85 Engine Issue
85 RX7 GS all stock 12a 72k miles
Including the following fixes within the past few years even if they aren't important to the issue: The carb has been rebuilt, new engine/trans mounts, transmission rebuilt, new clutch, new starter, replaced spark plugs, distributor replaced, fuel filter, the water pump has been replaced, and regular oil changes.
I am unsure if this is normal for a carburated car and the car has always done this since I've owned it (3 years I bought it with 58k.) Whenever the car is at idle and warmed up past the choke's return and I give the accelerator a quick press, the engine will sputter and die. If I do it a little slower, while it might sputter a moment, the engine will rev up quickly and healthy. If I keep the engine at anything above 1500rpm and then give the accelerator a quick press, the engine revs up quickly and normally. The car drives fine and has no issues once the engine is above 1500rpm. Thank you so much for any help.

Thank you for your reply. Could it be anything else? I had the carb rebuilt by a mechanic who has been working on 7's since the 80's, is there a reason why he wouldn't have done the diaphragm?

Look down through the air intake of the carb not running and give the throttle a couple of pumps . you should be able to see two healthy squirts of fuel out of the squirters . if not like Kentetsu said it is either the accelerator diaphram or the ball is stuck open inside the accelerator pump .. Just because the carb was rebuilt doesn't mean the guy didn't make a mistake . everyone does sooner or later . Gerald m.

DID YOU CHECK to see if the squirters are working ?? Just how long has it been since the carb was rebuilt . If it was just done then take it back to the dude and have HIM check it . but I'm getting the feeling that it has been a long time since anything has been done to the carb .
Well me not much of a Nikki guy I mostly play with Holley . The parts 61- 66 are the squirters you could remove and make sure they are not plugged WATCH OUT FOR THE LITTLE BALL Maybe stuff a clean cloth down the carb throat before starting the work in case the ball falls into the intake ,,, IF it does fall into the intake do not touch the throttle remove the carb and then remove the ball unless it is on top of the cloth then just pick it out . The accelerator pump is # 36-38 on the side if the carb it is also easy to check, just remove the screws and the pump will come apart Make sure #38 return spring is there , check the diaphragm to make sure it is good and yes there is adjustments to be made on the pump . This is about all I can help you with the Nikki but there are lots of guys on the forum that live and breath Nikki someone will come along and help you that knows more than I . Good Luck Gerald m.

Thanks for the info Gerald. I haven't had a chance to check to make sure it is squirting, I'll check that as soon as I can. The carburetor work was done a year ago and the car is drivable, it just isn't ideal with low rpm quick accelerator pushes. Before I take off the diaphragm area, should I try some type of carb cleaner if I see weak squirts?
