1st gen manual trans reverse switch
Hello, I have a 1984 Mazda RX7 GSLSE (first gen, 13b engine, 5speed manual) and am getting frustrated with the reverse light switch on the transmission.
Putting the car in reverse would not illuminate the reverse lights so after some research I bought a new reverse switch for the transmission and replaced it. It worked... for a bit. I don’t want to keep throwing parts at what should be a simple issue so a few questions:
Would the brand new switch that worked already go bad?
Is there something else that could go wrong on the transmission side to not engage the switch or possibly the wiring back to the lights?
How common is this issue?
Am I doomed to not see behind me every time I back up in the dark?

welcome to the board.
stranger things have happened, but i am doubtful.
do you have a copy of the FSM? if not, you can get one at Foxed.ca
my guess (without knowing anything else) is you're likely looking at a loose, dirty or broken wire or connector. find where the circuit is grounded and check there as well.
here are a couple threads that might provide some insights:
