Neutral safety switch rewire

So a little while back I posted that I was looking for the neutral switch on the trans pn r507-17-640 because Mazda no longer makes them. someone replied that I can rewire the reverse switch pn r508-17-640. I can purchase the new reverse switch and the rewire is easy. So my question is does that work because it’s a different switch or is it the same switch just how it’s wired and where it’s placed thanks. Posted this a while ago in the 3 gen specific forum but no response so just reposting thanks. First pic is old switch that’s no longer available second picture is the new one that I would rewire.

I THINK it should work. At least I know the switches will install in the other’s location. After having my transmission rebuilt I accidentally reversed those two switches. I only discovered my mistake when back-up lights came in a forward gear. I had to drop the transmission a second time to swap them but never actually drove the car.

I think I'm the one that posted that. It was based on what Atkins listed on the NLA part you were looking for.

I haven't had to do it myself, but I'm sure if you call Atkins they could tell you since they are suggesting it to people on their site.

They are both contact switches. I assume they both have the same thread size/count. Most likely the only difference is the plastic electrical connector, which you could carefully transfer over from your old broken switch.

Yep...I don’t recall any obvious differences in the switches. Hence my screw-up. Should’ve marked them when removed.
