1st Gen Idle/Carb Issues

Hi Everyone. I have a 1980 RX7 manual trans. It has 62,000 miles and is all original. It sat for about 95% of its life and hasn’t been on the road in about 15 years. A few years ago it was dug out of storage and found to not be running right. The carb was then completely rebuilt but something still isn’t right. I read some forums on here and tried to adjust the idle and mixture screw. The car fires right up with the choke and will run fine idling at higher rpms. With choke off it spits, sputters and backfires until it stalls out. Applying a little choke or simply just resting a foot on the gas pedal is enough to keep it idling steady at about 1000
rmps. I checked the front sight gauge and it’s about half full of fuel. I don’t know where to go with troubleshooting. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The ideal rpm at idle is 800. Can you adjust it for that? There are known issues with the non-factory carb rebuild kit needle and seats. If those where used from a non-Mazda kit that could be the issue. The fact that it will idle at 1000 rpm is pretty good.

I cannot get it below 1000 rpm and that’s only with a little bit of choke or just resting my foot on the accelerator. As soon as one of those elements is out of the picture it runs horrible for a few seconds until it stalls out. It was an oem carb rebuild kit.
