Ok, so now both of my RX-7's are down. My daily driver is leaking oil like crazy between the engine and the transmission. I don't know if it's the rear main or a tension bolt leaking, but that's all it could be. Either way, I have to pull the transmission AGAIN, pull the flywheel (ugh), and try to fix it.

This kind of thing makes me want to keep the GTU and do all the things to it that I want, which would be very easy to do now that it's completely stripped (clean the carpet & seats, dynomat the hell out of the sheetmetal). I'd have big brakes, a streetported motor, sunroof, limited slip differential, power steering, and cool GTU stickers .

What do you guys think? What would you do? I could always switch a few of my goods over and then sell the base model ($2500?) after I repair the leak. If I keep the base model, after I graduate in December and make real paychecks (JRAC offered me a full time spot) then I'll probably get rid of it anyway for something better (GTU, TII).

Considering my time frame I think a change of plans is OK.

Comments? Deep thoughts? I'm frustrated. Arg.

<------ Joined A few days ago. I am in the market for a very strong NA RX-7 S5. I am looking at a few listed for sale in the NOVA area. Wanted to know if anyone around here would be willing to help me out by meeting up and kind of going over "how" to look at and inspect the cars. I have been using a lot of the Club FAQ and I have had prior experience with tuning cars. My DD is an Integra, but I have always wanted a RX-7. However I have minimal hands on experience with the RX-7 and would greatly appreciate it if anyone would be willing to meet up, have a beer and just go over how to inspect and look at a S5 RX-7. I know to definately get the compression checked (85 and up or 7 on the Mazda Scale), oil usage, smoke, idling behavior etc. I just want to make sure I am doing this correctly.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I am in Crystal City but don't mind meeting somewhere.

Thanks
Alex

Zach, do you think you'll still be making the Sept.26th VMSC event?

It sounds to me like you have a pretty good idea of what to look for. Compression and mileage are probably the best gauges along with what type of person used to drive the car. The type of person reflects how well it was taken care of. Some people keep a folder of service records and modifications, which is a good sign.
I guess how much your spending and how much the seller is asking determines how picky you should be, but here are a few things I can think of specific to the RX-7:
Make sure the window switches work, the power seat belts work, reach into the engine bay and make sure the 6 port actuators work, check A/C operation and how the car idles with it on or off, see how the car starts and idles cold and hot (kind of testing the BAC).
Some of those are easy fixes but, like I said, it depends on how picky you want to be.

I would definately transfer over most of the suspension. I would have almost the same car, but better.
I've been thinking about it more today. What would be a better daily driver, a TII or GTU? I could make the GTU a dedicated track car and buy a TII sometime next year and make it a fast yet quiet DD. Then I'd get the best of both worlds.

Zach, do you think you'll still be making the Sept.26th VMSC event?
That depends on whether or not I get the leak fixed in time. What I really need to do is get the damn thing in a garage so I can knock it out quickly.

Yeah, me too.

Ok, now I'm thinking I'll make the GTU a DD.

Tomorrow I'll think something else.

Ok, so I fix the GTU, sell it, buy your TII, fix it, and that will be my DD.

As much as I love the 7, I must ask the question; Why not get a 'good' DD....you know, one of those cars that gets great gas mileage, low insurance, readily availlible parts, easy to work on, etc. Like a Honda.

I'm gonna try.

I can pay off most that car if I part out the TII...it's a call. I'm going to have to get rid of the '83 chassis laying around even if I ponder keeping the TII.

It just ******* sucks that if I sold the TII as is, I could get 1-1.5K, but part out the ECU/LT-8/2-3 other engine bits and get the same amount of cash, then sell the chassis as a roller for another K.

I think you can get a LOT more for your car than that. I've seen blown stock S5 TII's sell for 3k+ before

Don't do anything with it yet. I want it.

I want a RX-7 as a DD because I love driving the car, but I want to make it fast and nice e.g. quiet, nice stereo, and a cup holder.
That's why I was thinking a TII would be a good DD. It can be fast and quiet. NA's are too loud.

You should keep it and I'll help you rebuild it. That way I won't be tempted to buy it.

Doesn't look like I'm going to be able to.
