K/N Fitercharger Intake Kit on S5? Need Some Input Please

Has anyone used this K/N Filtercharger Intake Kit 86-88 RX-7 on a S5 N/a? http://www.racingbeat.com/RX7-1986-1...ers/16524.html

I have been searching one that would be for an S5 but I can't find it. I guess K/N doesn't make one for 89+.

If you have this on your S5 what kind of mods did you need to do to make it work?

Also, do you feel the performance difference with this filter kit?

Much appreciate

the S4 needs an adaptor to use a cone filter, the S5 does not. so there is no S5 kit because you dont need one.

hp gain is small, under 5hp

So basically, I can just put the cone on if I want right?

I guess I would just be better off getting a K/N drop in filter for my stock setup.

thank you for your input

There's also the underhood heat to think about. One thing on the filter though, I understand that the engine sucks oiled performance filters dry relatively quickly, rendering them ineffective at filtering.

I did some research this weekend and from what I have been reading the stock air intake box is just as good as if I get a aftermarket setup. Any comments on this finding?

From what i've read/seen, any aftermarket cone filter is useless because it's just sucking in hot engine bay air. Plenty of people have fabd up their own cold-air boxes, but Mariah makes a very nice one. I plan on getting this very soon, i contacted them and it can be used with any aftermarket cone (K&N, Blitz, Apexi, HKS), along with Mariah's NACA ducted headlight cover. It's said with that whole setup (Box-Filter-Headlight Vent) that around 10-15 rwhp can be gained.

Sorry if i rambled, but i've really looked into this before. Hope if helps.

My air filter is stuck right on the throttle body, and my intake air temps are ambient unless I'm sitting still for ten minutes. That is, the air flowing into the engine is ambient.

The engine bay air is not very hot, there's always air flowing through it you know.

Now, if you want to do something for power, look into flowing air at the intake manifold itself. There's a big difference in power between that first cold pull, and after the intake manifold itself is heated up. David Vizard has found shocking power gains by carefully working to decouple an intake manifold from the heat around it - thermal coatings, insulation, the works.

I guess so, but rotaries do run hotter than most engines, right? I plan on doing the whole setup really, maybe a Corksport free-er flowing intake pipe, heat wrapped, then all the filter stuff. The cold air box with the NACA ducted headlight really should make the supply of air much better though. But correct me if i'm wrong, i'm still learning.

they used too, but modern piston engines actually run hotter. the turbo BMW's run temps that would melt the rotary.

that being said, colder air can't hurt, and since the intake sits right on top of the engine, insulating it does help

The OEMs don't like to see oil get much over 300 degrees (the bearings start to bubble) and usually don't switch the fans on until the coolant is at 230-245f.

No, rotaries don't run hotter...
